The Bicycle

Little Johnny very much wanted a bicycle, and his parents agreed to give him one, but only after he earned it by doing chores around the house for several months. Johnny was very eager to get started, and he held up his end of the bargain through no small amount of effort.

When the agreed-upon time period was complete, Johnny came home from school one day to find the shiniest new bicycle he had ever seen waiting for him in his driveway. He jumped for joy, and asked his parents if he could ride his new bike to Billy’s house. He was so excited!

His dad, however, pulled him aside and told him that he had done well in his work, but that he must schedule time in advance to ride the bicycle. Spontaneous use of this privilege was not part of the family plan. In fact, his dad was proud to announce, there was time available on a Wednesday, 1 year ahead!

Johnny was crushed. He didn’t understand why, even though he had fulfilled his end of the bargain, earning the bicycle fair and square, he couldn’t use the bicycle when HE wanted to, which was SOON. However, being well-mannered, he didn’t complain. He did have the presence of mind to ask, though, if there were any exceptions. He was told by his dad they would let him know if some time before the Wednesday of next year became available, but, absent that, he would have to wait. After all, not every family member could use their earned privileges at the same time. Johnny reluctantly agreed, but went to his room and cried and cried, feeling very defeated.

Some years later, long after the difficult bicycle memory faded, Johnny was hired by a large corporation. On his first day of work, a very proud Johnny (John, now) showed up at the company’s Human Resources office. The Human Resources representative he met with with welcomed him warmly, and said “Sit down, John, let me tell you about our PTO plan...”

Name another company that does what SF does. For heavens sake I worked for a fast food company in my younger days which had a plan to be able to take time off. Currently it’s entirely possible an employee may never get a Friday / Monday off. It’s your PTO you should be able to take it when you want with reasonable advanced notice. But how do you plan time off 6 months or worse even over a year in advance?? And even then possibly never get it, so then you have to wait until the schedule is published and then hope someone gives up those dates or refigure your vacation after you just got done planning it a year in advance. I’ve been fortunate because of my ratings and my tenure but I know new employees in that can never get off when they want so they start taking random Wednesday’s, etc. no way to retain talent at all!

I don’t disagree there are times when not everyone can take off. July 4th week, Xmas, etc. but there are way better plans than this to get employees off.

Finally the day rolled around when little Johnny was to take his bike for his first ride. He was so excited, finally getting to ride his new bike with the shiny new training wheels and his brand new safety helmet, as he rounded the corner for the first time he was confronted by big bubba who btch slapped him and stole his new bike.

Little Johnny sat down to write a heart-wrenching story about not being able to ride his bicycle on Monday or Friday for the next year. Little Johnny never used 'Monday' or 'Friday' in his short story. The only day Little Johnny mentioned was Wednesday. Somebody read Little Johnny's short story, and didn't know that Little Johnny was actually writing about Mondays and Fridays. Maybe Little Johnny should take some writing lessons :-)

Any "good" company recognizes their employees are internal customers and should staff to allow time off rather than running at the margin. Again, the company is selling a Cadillac but delivers a smart car. Slave owners, RICO violators, and title 7 violators

YO5YU9k-2czn...."having a policy that will allow any employee to take time off, at any time, without any consideration of the impacts to customer service"

Not being able to take time off any Monday or Friday for a year is what was described, not anytime without consideration for impacts.

Once again SF defender misstating the problem so that it makes the company seem reasonable.

I don't want to be accused of throwing cold water on the pity party, but please name for me one business that would be able to staff adequately, in order to provide excellent customer service, while at the same time having a policy that will allow any employee to take time off, at any time, without any consideration of the impacts to customer service. Thank you very much, and I eagerly await your response.

I'm a nobody, but it seems like most high volume departments are consistently understaffed. Better to offer overtime than hire enough employees for proper staffing? Gotta squeeze blood from that turnip.

Absolutely true. I've been very depressed because my friends and family are planning long weekend trips to take over the next several months, I keep getting invited to go on these trips and would like to go see friends/family that live far away as well, but I will never get to go on ANY of them because of our f---ing nightmarish PTO planning system would never afford me a Friday or a Monday off within the next year. They all tell me the same thing..."that's awful" and "you really need a new job". Might as well have "property of SF" tattooed on my backside!
