Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

This was not a well thought out strategy for the layoff process

GM Executive Leadership failure to create a well thought out strategy for the layoff process provides some insight into the gross mismanagement at GM. Thousands were laid off without an advanced plan to handle the loss of key staff that were leaders running the company. The day after many in Engineering were laid off, people showed up at vehicle Program meetings with 30 attendees without anyone to run the meeting and no one knowing what to do. Many key functions today are still missing people and no one knows how to handle based on high workload issues. Directors made the call on those forced to leave without ANY input from their direct supervisors. Did they have time to delay the layoffs until they had a detailed plan in place? Absolutely, GM financial performance was above average and certainly taking an extra month or two to come up with a detailed plan prior to pulling the layoff trigger would have been reasonable. Mary B. decided that showing Wall Street a great cost reduction in 2019 right away might boost the stock, without any regard for keeping the company running. With such little foresight, Is that a company that consumers would trust to implement a safe Autonomous vehicle?

This needed to be in its own thread - perfectly summed up by @YKnAZHX-sit.

No. We won't take on this added responsibility. Send Mary down to conduct these meetings. She decided to get rid of the people previously in charge of them, so she must be ready to take on the additional work. Not us.

@YKljRMb-nsq Global B is going great. Very minor issues, just like it has been from the start. Seems to not have been a gamble at all to put it on our most important programs.

In 2008 I had 22 years at General Motors, they cut our pay and benefits in half. We were given “buy down money” to adjust. We still had to finish raising our kids and it was going to be super tight. Bottom line, I bought a 2010 Prius new and paid cash for it. Fast forward to 2019, I’m retired, I have almost 140,000 miles on it. I’ve put three sets of tires on it, replaced both front and rear brakes ONCE, replaced the regular 12v battery twice, (last time was December 2018 and it was replaced free under a manufacturer warranty), and the usual oil changes, wiper blades etc. I can tell you from experience it’s a damn reliable car period. If I had it to do all over again the only thing I would’ve done differently is by a higher end model with leather, and a back up camera. Should have made Hybrids Car's Mary!!! But GM Just changed designs... Get it together.. The car is a Go Cart!! But I bought it for Reliability. And I knew the model would not change but still Wake Up Mary!!

If you recall, they did delay the layoff several times.

Apparently they didn't use that time wisely.

Work smarter, not harder. If you have been going to the dam meetings so long, why can not any other attendee run them? We’re you all sleeping, or looking out the window? Wake up.

It WAS well thought out, actually.... at least from a bean-counter perspective. We can thank Dhivya Suryadevara for that.

Cars are cars.

Engineers are engineers.

Experience means nothing.

Performance means nothing.

It's ALL about $$. If other companies are getting by with smaller budgets, so can GM.
