Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

For the worker bees left at GM , how bad is it there , Is it business as usual or mass chaos?

What's it like , new college hires happy , are there still people being let go? I worked in Pontiac Global Propulsion Systems , what is the latest news at the facility?

Stack racking brings a vicious, back biting culture and destroys team work.

You have to look out for yourself.

You reap what you sow

Everything that GM has been doing to try to improve the culture was just flushed down the toilet.

You could see it in the weeks leading up to the layoffs. Teamwork went down. Brown-nosing went up. People stepping on others to make sure they looked good.

That will be the future. As long as I get ahead and keep my job, it doesn't matter how many people end up thrown under that bus.

Ahmed's group needs to be looked at, too.

They targeted people who have less than 3 years or more than 10 years of service.

Lots of people GONE!! A lot came back. A lot left after they got there bonus and a week check. But the Bees are saving honey and kissing butt for there own gain. Don't blame them but snuffing out your co-worker makes no sense. They still get there check. It's now like the old GM I remember. Crabs in a bucket and MINE! MINE!! MINE!!!! No work for you!!! How does management allow team members to hold all the work from other team members? and watch the others burn and boil with frustration, just thinking they are next on the list of layoff. It's a Crabby World at GM. Friends keeping friends hired. How does a company that just laid off 4000 people allow this. It there culture I guess.. just check the directors list of friends. Worst area for this GCCX!!!!

@YJkZTPG-xfq it was based on demographics with age being the first factor.,

After the fact, our Exec Director told us at an all people meeting that the cuts were NOT based on performance or CAP. That explains why we're burdened with the same dead weight we had previously, except now they account for a larger percentage of the organization.

Keep the bad, get ride of the good. Interesting strategy.

I suspect that Steve Yzerman might take a different approach in turning the Red Wings around.

A few programs got cancelled. Less people are planning long term at GM. Rotate in, learn skills then rotate out and apply those skills at another company that likely competes with GM. Z That is what management wants.

They use your age, wage, and how many years you've worked for GM (10 yrs). They never use CAP or your expertise.

If the directors didn't talk to managers or look at CAPs in their layoff decisions, what did they use?

I'm sure they kept the people they liked, but my group was pretty big and I never even met my director.

All I can say is that the atmosphere within Engineering is dismal. Many have seen their talented coworkers forced out without cause while the known incompetent folks were kept because they were liked by the Director. Managers were never asked for their input in who stays/goes...decisions were made by Directors without input from Managers or even looking at their past CAPs. So now that we know we cannot trust Senior Leadership to support our careers, many Engineers are out looking for a more satisfying work environment.
