Thread regarding Anadarko Petroleum Corp. layoffs

In the pipeline for APC's New Hire College Program - start date soon approaching!

I have a strong oil and gas background for a college student. I'm from rural East Texas, so naturally, I went and worked out in the field for a little over a year. Additionally, I had an internship with an oil and gas consulting firm. I'm finishing up my degree in MIS and being hired by APC to work in IT Audit.

What are my chances for survival?

BTW, I got the job at anadarko, and I survived the acquisition and now work for Oxy. Guess some of you were wrong.

We're all just one dowturn away from being freelancers. Most employers know it. Ride it out but keep looking and weigh your options in realtime. The only bad move is putting your head in the sand.

@3kjf, It’s true there are other websites to get insights on a company, but on this site you get the Good, Bad and the Ugly. Different perspectives for sure, but as you sift through the trolls and immaturity, you will get a sense of the truth coming from disgruntled employees as well as serious ones. Most come here to get that “different perspective” one needs to find a balance. I’m intelligent enough to sort out what’s real and what’s dubious. Aren’t you that way too?

I’d go back to work in the field, better odds of survival. Plus APC is a terrible organization, aim higher

You do realize that unless you do this type of work at an auditing firm or consulting firm (billable role) than you are nothing more than overhead, right? But, hey you'll figure it soon enough...

To the OP: asking for advice on a website where disgruntled Anadarko employees band together to sh-- talk the company is a great way to get some very skewed answers. If you're actually interested in an unbiased answer, I can think of many other discussion boards to ask.

I spent 30 years in the oil industry. I started in 1986 with Chevron when the price of oil was at one of its lowest points in decades. I was offered the job just before the price collapsed. Chevron honored that offer and never let me go despite numerous layoffs over the next ten years. It was true that Chevron considers new hires "safe" so they can learn what it is they have just acquired. However, I am not sure I would count on this in your case because you were actually hired by Anadarko. There is also long-standing bias in the oil field not to trust someone else's hiring practices so not sure where you will fall will this one. The oil industry is a bumpy ride to say the very least so even if you survive this one you can be sure there will be others coming and likely they will be coming one after the other. Keep your resume and network updated constantly. Good luck.

Define "being hired". Is it definite? When?

Take the job, kiss butt (better job security than college), and if you get let go of in a year, at least your resume will be that much stronger.

Good Luck

Working for a little over a year in the field and having a one summer of internship does not give you a strong oil and gas background, sonny. Kudos to you for having a leg up on many of the youngsters trying to get a job, but please dispense with the “strong O&G background” credential. Strike that line from your resume if you want half a chance of being hired. No seasoned professional likes to hear or read claims like that one. Just state your experience and let it be judged for what it is. You probably have a good chance of getting in, but don’t start BS’ing your way from the start. That’s frowned upon.

Chevron will probably put you in the safe bucket, at least that's how they handled new/recent hires in the recent layoffs

Last I checked we're in the oil & gas business, not the IT Audit business. Your job will be eliminated along with all other non-essential employees.

Why would they hire someone who would be laid off in a few months? Doesn't make any sense
