Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Who’s Not Terminated? Read On....

I worked in a group of about several hundred employees at WTC, where roughly 50% are H1B visa holders from China, India, and the Middle East. I have not seen any H1B holders terminated (there may be some but didn’t see). I don’t have any animosity against those people, most of whom are ordinary individuals who are trying to hold down a job. But I do find GM’s actions egregious. The company barely survived on taxpayer bailout ten years ago, and in a year of record profits, they are shedding US citizens and filling the company with H1B holders. That visa category was intended to allow hiring of foreign nationals only if there was a shortage of qualified candidates.

My group had 2 people let go. Both were young H1b’s who were hard working, focused and helpful.

So, both sides to one story.

I'm with @hqz on this one, this story is bull. Less than 0.5% of our workforce are H1Bs, and we are to believe almost every single one ended up working in this guy's group.

This is simply fake.

Name the group.

H1b data is public and you can see everyposition filledby an h1b - the entire 400k employee GM hired 800 h1bs in last six years. Many were not in IT.

Again, post the “@large” group name and i will give you the link to the public info

I think they're only p-ss-d at GM, not coworkers. A mess.

It's very sad to see people turning on each other, instead of encouraging the people terminated, trying to cope, and hoping to move forward.

Excellent response, thank you, that was helpful info. But still, the fact remains that the visa was indeed designed to fill a vacancies b/c of inadequate domestic supply.

I know 30 languages, but they are all for computers :)

H1B’s are taxed at higher rates as well. 6a here 92k salary I paid 40k in taxes last year with kids and sole earner. We paid into that bail out too. We pay a premium to live here. Sorry my face is brown and I know 5 languages. But we were hired for a reason. Not to throw you out of a job. But to fill a vacancy.

How do you know they are H1B? Just because someone is a foreigner does no mean they are automatically H1B. I am a foreigner that does not need sponsorship. Seems like maybe you’re attempting to place blame somewhere it might not belong. Getting let go is tough. Not sure the H1Bs were to blame though. Goo luck!

No, that's a misread, almost searched for. The point is citizen/taxpayer vs. people invited in to handle- by law- the extra work. In this case taxpayers brought GM back to life, paid to do so. Has nothing to do with scorning them.

There seems to be a lot of animosity towards foreign workers particularly of Indian/Asian decent from what I read through these post because of this HB1. It's not a good day to be a foreigner at GM.
