Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM should cancel TRACKoffers and retain knowledgeable engineers

As someone who finished TRACK last year I’m not sure how you believe TRACK employees will lead GM into the future. Most (myself included) are completely clueless until someone shows them the ropes. I felt the program was a waste of time and I got little out of it. If it wasn’t for senior engineers that took the time to help me develop then I would be useless. I know people about to finish school that have TRACK offers to start this summer. GM should cancel those offers and retain knowledgeable engineers instead of people with little experience. The only downside to this would future candidates avoiding GM.

Well said by @XuiPgDZ-1yts . Thought it deserved to be reposted.

Hey @XvZVm98-1qrj

Previous poster @XvZVm98-nnv here.

Just wanted to add that I think I was maybe one of the lucky ones (I talked too much maybe, lol) that was able to get first pick in all of my TRACK roles including my post-TRACK role. I was able to score my first choices each rotation. Also received rewards and recognition as well -- but it seems to be luck of the draw or you just have to know how to talk to people in general. I think being a people-person really helped me.

I made the original post that OP is quoting. I stick by most of what I said. However, I do agree with @XvZVm98-nnv too. I’ve met many people through the TRACK (vehicle, GPS, manufacturing, purchasing, etc) and I think each person has a different experience. I’ve heard many great experiences and others that were similar to mine. This is not just a GM thing since I’ve heard the same at FCA & Ford. Depending on the individual they had good or bad experiences at all 3 companies. I performed well (actually getting above expectations on my CAP) and received great recognition from my senior engineers and leadership. However, I was not able to move around or get as much exposure in different groups that I would have liked or from what I’ve heard from other TRACK employees. I did ask management and TRACK lead for my group with no luck. That is why it was a waste of time for me. It’s a great program when done right, but was not for me.

Either way good luck to everyone during this hard time.

They're doing layoffs yet still hiring people or having new people coming in within the next few months. Why?

I think it really depends on the individual and jobs you get when you're in your TRACK rotation. I learned and gained a lot of knowledge working on different programs at different times of the GVDP. I was able to grow a huge network through all of the people I met and worked with throughout my 2 years in the TRACK program. I'd like to think I excelled in my previous roles and gained a reputation among my peers and leadership.

However, I have also met some TRACK Engineers who have been unexposed and do not enjoy their time in TRACK. It really comes down to the individual and what job rotations you gained during the TRACK program.

Regardless, this is a scary time for all. At the end of the day, leadership is who to blame because they overbloated with new hires, experienced hires, and old hires in the last couple of years and now they want to take the sword and swing it bluntly cutting out thousands of jobs. Good luck to all.
