Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Done

My son was laid off on Monday, and he is devastated. I've never seen him like this. As a mother, it breaks my heart to see him like that.

I can guarantee you General Motors that I am done with you forever. You lost a loyal customer with this move. And I am sure I am not the only one.

So with all the ill will GM is creating, sales will go down even more; and they'll have to fire more people in a couple more years, seems like a downward spiral?

If I got laid off and my mom started posting online about how mad she was at the company, I wouldn’t be too happy about it. Sounds like he had some hardships and now you’re scared to let him be an individual because you don’t want him to hurt more

You can’t control it, you need to give him some space. There are lots of highs in his future, but there are also lots of lows and he needs to be able to handle those lows.

Good on you. Some of us learned this lesson much sooner in life. I put my money where my mouth is, and purchased five, non-gm vehicles. There was a point, where I actually did own GM products, but not anymore. They say, don't bite the hand that feeds you, but they also forgot to mention, that sometimes the hand beats you in between the feedings. The abused, eventually figure it out.

Well at least now he has a good reason for still living in your basement. Let him deal with this on his own, It will make him a better man in the long run.

@vng you have no idea about the depression and anxiety that my child is dealing with. He has been through so much in his life this job was the only thing that he had. It is one of the reason he is here till this day. If you truly understood the situation you also wouldn’t buy GM.

That is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. Punish everyone since you were effected personaly. I guess it would be better if the company went down in flames since you couldn’t have it your way. How about you increase demand for the product so that they will hire him back. Fool.

Also mom thank you for being there in my hardships. I was up all night crying trying to figure out why I lost my job. The stories you told me of dad’s career over a bowl of ice cream really helped raise my spirits after this devastating experience.

Good luck to everyone both who were let go and retained. We can only get stronger from these life changing experiences.

Regarding Done - I have worked for companies that have disappeared off the face of the earth

Compuware, EDS, HP, Ciber. They disappeared because they couldnt adapt. What I learned along the way is encapsulated in this on etsy

Ditto, mom. If the details were of this and priors were of higher character/quality I might feel differently. I'm open-minded and objective. But what I've seen is not to be honored. More people will need to move to better places. Best of luck to those still in.

@Xv5aLEj-evl If you work for GM, the mentality is that you support the company who pays you by purchasing or leasing a vehicle. I've heard people say that the people who don't own a GM vehicle are the first that should be shown the door. That puts fear in some people to follow status quo.

I don't understand why people think they must buy a vehicle from the comapny they work for. Thank goodness we don't work for Electric Boat or NASA.

What I choose to own is none of anyone's business.

Yes to some it's a be upset for a moment and dust yourself off and move on situation. BUT we have to remember that some people may already have actual mental health issues, that can be triggered, by something like this. Not saying the son in the OP has them, but there's phone numbers inside the packet for resources to talk to as this is understandably a difficult time.

I am 40 and this is the 4th lay-off I’ve been through. The first one I was let go, survived the second, took a buyout the third, and now here. You need to be resilient, things change constantly.

I have kids, a mortgage, and a lot of financial responsibilities but if I get cut I already have a plan to dust off and figure out my next move.

If your son has kids and responsibilities I get it, but if he’s in his 20s with no kids and lives at home you may have coddled him a bit too much growing up

@Xv5aLEj-pea let's see how you feel once you get your blue bag. You may not have been tapped this round, but don't fool yourself, more are coming. And it doesn't matter if you are high performer, lower performer, young, or old. If you think you are too valuable to be let go, spend some time rereading every one of the posts on this site.

So keep on being loyal to a company who has zero loyalty to its employees.

I’m very sorry to hear about your son and your feelings now about GM, but it’s not the fault of all the rest of the employees still employed that you will be affecting with your decision out of anger.

I am very sorry to hear about your son. Take the cues from him on how he wants to cope with it, but encourage him to take advantage of outplacement services as they offer some good resources on all things needed for looking for a job.

I am with you on never purchasing another GM product again and I hope many others follow suit.
