I have heard we are ranked but now I am seeing the term Stack Rank. Can anyone explain how we get ranked?

The 9-box is basically a 3x3 grid. Each axis has a value - "Does not meet", "Meets" or "Exceeds". The X Axis is Behaviors (i.e. does this person act professionally in the office or do they have attitude problems). The Y-Axis is results (i.e. are they completing assigned tasks without having their manager sit in their cube and micromanage them). Your "score" is based on where you fall in that grid.

As far as stack ranking goes: if you are surrounded by people that have a 9-box score of 8 or 9 and you are a 5, you are more than likely at the bottom. If your co-workers are all 4, 2 or 1 and you are a 5 then you are the one-eyed person in the land of the blind. This presents a massive problem because one department could have very high expectations and the majority of their employees could be ranked 5. Another department could hold the ability to convert oxygen to carbon dioxide as a rare skill and have all of their employees in the 9 box. This leads to a very uneven playing field.

From a manager's point of view, stack ranking is essentially a way of asking, "If you had to complete the same amount of projects with x fewer people, which people could you live without?"

If you are high-performing but for some reason do not get along with your manager then you should be updating your resume. The good news is that there are a lot of good openings all over the place.

Best of luck to you.

You get ahead by playing politic, not help other, and be a d--k and throw your coworkers under the bus every chance you get. That it is what it translate to. It is the polar opposite of teamwork and learning through failing.

That's the way it's SUPPOSED to work.

GM manglers, being what they are, probably just use spitballs since darts would be considered "weapons".

Straight from the PowerPoint:

The 9 box is a talent management tool represented by a nine box grid. It provides a visual representation of documented business results on one axis and leadership behaviors on the other axis for a group of individuals in a particular organization. When creating the 9 box, the emphasis is on differentiation (a balanced distribution across the organization).

What is the Purpose of the 9 Box?

It is a robust people process that . . .

•Provides a visual framework to discuss the performance (business results and leadership behaviors) of the organization’s talent.

•Reveals the quality of the leadership pipeline – a better understanding of the Company’s competitive advantage.

•Allows the organization to use the information within the tool to move leaders in and out of boxes as the assessment of their business results and leadership behaviors change over time.

•Provides an opportunity to openly discuss an individual’s business results and leadership behaviors.

•Identifies action plans to further develop the leadership pipeline and deal with those who are not succeeding.

It’s called the 9 box and it’s in relation to your yearly review. Everybody is ranked by exceeds, meets, and doesn’t meet expectation on technical and interpersonal skills.
