@XrZiciX-2ryn I think you just insulted most of the people here on this SEARS LAYOFF WEBSITE.

To be fair, it doesn't matter how big the stores are, as long as they continue to hire r----ds. Has anyone reading this been in a Sears store, in the last 10 years? The employees, oh excuse me, "Associates", can't even acknowledge a customer that is standing in front of them, let alone answer a simple question. Most, do what ever they can to run-a-way, if they even think someone might ask them something. SO, it doesn't matter, how big or small the stores are, if they won't hire people with at least half a brain.

Most the stores already are like that, so whatever, they're so screwed up as it is, I doubt smaller footprints will really help.

Plus, the headlines of “Sears to open new stores” could help revive consumer confidence in the brand

Small stores can include a soft lines assortment as well just like to reopened store in October. I think the store they redid in October actually looks nice and might be a good plan going forward.

The only SHC owned hardlines only store I’m aware of was out west (Denver area maybe?) and only sold appliances and mattresses. No tools or other HL stuff was available, and it was basically the remains of Brand Central with a small mattress dept. grafted on. For the stuff they did sell, all of it had to be ordered, as nothing was kept in-stock. I haven’t heard anything about that store in a while and have a suspicion it closed, but when nothing is in stock and will take a minimum of 4 days to get there, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why it failed.

Note that the SHOS owned Hometown franchises (that only sell hardlines) seem to be doing well enough (when they can get product) to remain open.

there are many reduced sized stores reduced to hard-lines , tools mattresses etc. They are failures also. If a store has only hard-lines why not go to Best Buy or Home Deport for a better shopping experience?

@yff

Those stores belong to SHOS now, not SHLD. Aa near as I can tell the difference between them and a Hometown store is that they weren’t franchised.

They made our Sears store a small store with hardlines, appliances, tools, lawn and garden, and mattresses and guess what happened. They closed our store and said they never should have gotten rid of softlines. Softlines creates more consistent traffic whereas the other merchandise creates traffic only when needed. Without softlines, or jewelry, or footwear there are no impulse items to purchase.

@nwd - Sears has already tried this approach with the Sears Hardware & Appliance stores. The stores sell only hardlines, appliances, tools, and lawn & garden. They weren't exactly a huge success. All of the stores located in my area closed many years ago. The concept still exist, explore the link below.

This is Draft material from November and December 2018. It covers multiple scenarios and is mostly a pitch to sell Sears as a going concern instead of liquidation. This is not a final plan.

Slashes labor costs more than anything. Hardlines associates are all in some way shape or form compensated via commission. The labor involved in selling major appliances, or tools, or L&G stuff is minimal. Softlines has sky-high margins, but tons of labor is needed on a continual basis to maintain the sales floor. People also don’t came to Sears for clothes. I’m more surprised though that they haven’t closed more A stores. Lord knows there’s more than enough 2000 series numbers to pick from.

Not sure why this is a bad idea. No great secret that most of of what they actually sell is hardlines, appliances, tools and lawn & garden. Could even shake some of the stigma and have Kenmore appliance stores.
