That's what the rumor next to my watercooler is - what are your thoughts on GM CIO layoff targets. Again, it's a rumor and it may be off, I am just interested in what people think.

This layoff is all about slaughtering GMIT. The IT was unnecessarily overblown, GM overpaid to bring average IT ppl from around the US (spent $20-50k for relocating many of those folks), hired ppl like anything (have seen people having bachelors in chemistry started working as IT QA in GM right after graduating from college ), and now they have identified who to keep and who to let go. So, it's quite apparent the number would be huge. Forget about those that are sitting idle for sometime (they would be gone for sure). Even those who were busy with projects will be all part of this Monday morning slaughter. So, just be prepared (mentally) to accept your fate, and get your resume ready to compete in the market. No matter where you are, when hundreds of people will be in the market together, it wouldn't be easy to find a new job.
I would expect about 2k involuntary. There were. It many IT people that were eligible for voluntary and IT has a larger target so it’s it going to be a rough ride this week in IT. Hard to imagine getting anything done. I’m not optimistic about my chances.
I would not count on across the board... IT is going to get slaughtered... it would not surprise me if over half of that 4250 are IT. There was so much redundancy after the insourcing... You had Mott bringing his cronies, all legacy IS&S folks still there, and then 5000 HP people coming in, followed by 2000 NCHs, and several other insourcing deals leading to a massive overstaffing. Industry standard for IT is 10% of staff, which would put it at 5500, IT is at around 9000 right now!
Some CIOs are 20%, some 35, and some 30
User @pwt breaks down numbers and nails it
Ok, suppose you're right. The target is 4250 people. I'd like to know what fraction is IT, vs Engineering at WTC, etc. If there are 4000 people in IT, 20% would translate into 800 people. Or 800/4250 or 18% of the total that'll be cut. Let's round that up to 20%. The most vocal people on this board seem to be IT, I'd like to know the fate of the other 80%. How many people on EV are going to get laid off - despite it being the "future" of the company.
Senior Management was told it would be 25-30% for each CIO.
