Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Why does Michigan hate the rest of the business?

Reading all of the threads about how IT has to go and what not is pretty eye opening. I know my group works very closely with our counterparts in Michigan to create tools that are useful, but reading here it doesn’t seem like that work is generally appreciated. If the layoffs don’t get me it seems like this would reason enough for most of us to consider to opportunity’s where innovation is more widely accepted.

@1fcj - I agree that Flint having a bright future is utopia, but I do believe downtown Detroit is a different matter. It was once a powerful city, and it is on its way to restore some of that past glory. At least as far as the urban environment is concerned. Try saying that suburbia is the future to NYC...

Downtown Detroit is a wasteland of failed comeback attempts. The only ones who tout that it's "coming back" are the very investors trying to bring people to their businesses. No one in their right mind wants to work in Detroit, Flint, and even Warren is becoming suspect. If GM really wanted to move ahead, they'd do what Chrysler did back in the 90's....build a new tech center in north suburbia.....we all know people live in the northern Suburbs and only drive to Warren because they have to. The environment and air quality decline with each decreasing mile road.

All this animosity created by the Dell Mafia...

It didn't have to be this way.

Mostly non-GM trolls who are stirring the pot. There really is nothing.

@XqSHJIb-bbb If Michigan is the business, then they should be able to read the past several year's worth of financial statements to understand the hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in cost reduction recovered by in-sourcing IT. You know... the money that was supposed to go back into the company's products. It's not IT's fault if the business spent those funds elsewhere than on the products.

All I know about Austin is it's a beautiful place with excellent food! I'm born raised in Michigan , I think the state has alot more going on than folks realize. My question is why wouldn't GM open a new facility in booming downtown Detroit ? the area is becoming really great again. New manufacturing plant on Michigan Ave or some technical offices ? Ford has the train station now. Why not help rebuild Flint Michigan ? Why does GM move people around like a band of gypsy's ? Open and close buildings constantly , that is a clear indication CEOs and upper management have not a clue as to what they are doing. $44 million investment in Pontiac close half of it , move people to Warren ? Ok :/

The sooner you guys leave "The South", the better.

And remember this: Michigan leads the country in nothing. When's the last time you heard positive news about business in Michigan? Hmmm. Let's see.

America's Top States for Business 2018

Texas #1 overall; #1 Economy; #7 Workforce; #9 Technology

Georgia #7 overall.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/10/americas-top-states-for-business-2018.html

10 best places to live in the United States in 2018.

  1. Austin, Texas

10 best cities to start a career and build a life:

  1. Atlanta, Georgia (include Roswell here)

  2. Tempe, Arizona

  3. Austin, Texas

I could keep going on. Key takeaway - NOTHING in Michigan is near the top of these lists.

In fact, Detroit has a wikipedia page to document it's decline:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decline_of_Detroit

There's nothing special about business up in Detroit. Michigan has 0 RECENT HISTORY of innovation. Your business ideas are legacy and weak. GM's days are numbered.

Understand, GM is an old school company, and when I say old I mean really old. Most of the folks working there would prefer to go back to a drafting desk.

Remember this well: there won’t be a Michigan when IT automates all the jobs ;)

Michigan -- ahem -- IS the business. The rest is just insourced-outsourced IT -- essentially outsourced IT that wears GM badges. Like the other guy said below, hiring in the south was purely a political move.

Remember this well: every dollar spent on IT is a dollar not spent on the product.

I’m pretty sure 90% of the ‘X has to go’ are just trolls reading this forum piecing together buzzwords from employees posting here and trying to stir sh-- up.

Waste of space in my opinion just like Cadillac being in New York. Look where that got them.

Don’t need to be down south to do IT or innovation. Extra overhead that’s not needed.

That may be your perception without knowing complete history, particularly during GM bankruptcy.

When Obama's Auto Czar took over GM, they changed vendors willynilly without any thought process. These included hardware suppliers, hosting vendors and others. Irony, some of these vendors helped GM thru the bankruptcy with its cost cutting measures.

When Randy Mott took over, he forced vendor employees to join GM, the other option was layoff. He also replaced most senior staff in Michigan with his Dell colleagues, He hired total 10000 IT employees. Absolutely unnecessary.

2016 GM purchased Cruise an autonomous car software company. Honda is also investing in it. So the need for in-house skill disappeared overnight. Elon Musk released all Tesla patents, GM can use opensource software.

Bob Corker was an opponent of GM bailout, based on his regional views. So after bailout if Randy hires 1000s from the South, obviously people in Michigan fell bad.

Lots of inbreeding up there. Wouldn't take it personally..?they're still trying to invent the wheel. Real tech is in the innovation centers.

Most people in Michigan, myself included, have absolutely know idea what goes on in Austin or any of the other IT centers (wherever they may be). Don’t take any bad comments personally. I think we’re all just a little grumpy because of the cobbled up integration between our processes and the technology we rely upon to execute them.
