Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Gut wrenching anxiety about the week to come

Even if I won’t be personally affected (believe me, I have NO idea), Monday/Tuesday will be devastating to me. Seeing security beefed up walking in, then watching my friends and coworkers doing the walk of shame will be agonizing. I can’t even hide in a cubicle crying because I don’t have one.

My stress level have skyrocketed in the last 3 weeks and my motivation is at an all time low.

I went through this exactly 10 years ago with another company and they literally chased after me as I walked in to the shop to check on my prototype builds. I was shocked then as I didn’t see it coming. I was also 5 months pregnant...

This time I am more mentally prepared (and not pregnant lol) but sh--!

I am a 9 year GM veteran in my early 40’s and just changed position in November. I am worried, but I also know that nothing can be worse than it was 10 years ago with the job market at an all time low.

Everyone (including myself) that are worried, don’t fret the future. We will get through this, and who knows, maybe it is for the better folks?

Everything happens for a reason. Let’s be kind and unite through this hard week coming up, know that almost everyone shares your anxiety.

productivity in corporate environments follow a pareto distribution- 20% doing 80% of the work is about right.

managers were asked to stack rank their employees- how much these cuts help or hurt GM is based ENTIRELY on their analysis, of which I do not have faith in. I'm in the same boat- if any of the hardest workers are let go, I'm out.

Nobody really knows what the criteria is for who stays and who goes.

Stop with all the wage, degree, age-based theories. In fact, just stop with the theories.

None of us know if we are on the cut list or not. Yes this week will be very stressful, but at least we can finally move on!

I am a few years in from the NCG programs, and I can say the layoffs have definitely caused me to have mistrust for my coworkers and management. Especially after hearing about "the list" the managers make of their resources. In my case my performance as my boss understands is completely dictated by what my coworkers say about me because I am a dev. I am normally a pretty motivated worker but now I have lost all of my motivation to be productive at work. At this point this job seems like a dead end job if I was to choose to stay.

It would make for a great time to have another baby, 40's or not!

Best of luck. Since you're in your 40's hopefully you have a network of professionals from your last job. I reached out to some recently and have a verbal offer from one that is in upper management at another company. If I don't get canned it would be a difficult decision if I want to stay. But I have noticed my mind is more clear after getting the verbal.

Great post. Thank you. This is what we should be seeing on this board - support/encouragement/advice/words of wisdom and such along with perhaps useful relative information. Negativity, bad mouthing the company or management is not constructive and leads nowhere. Good luck to all.

I hope its about skill set, but honestly I just doubt it based on what I know about GM so far. I predict more salary based cuts.

There are certain people I work with who if they get laid off I would definitely start considering moving on even if I do get get laid off myself. I'd say only 50% of my coworkers are even necessary to have, and that 20% of us do 80% of the work. So if one of these 20% gets cut, I question what GM is doing.

Guess we will find out soon...

Legal has to sign off on everyone getting laid off, they wouldn't have signed off on only people over the age of 40 or 50. That would be one huge lawsuit waiting to happen.

Yeah, being mentally ill with a severe anxiety disorder has done me no favors. Doubled all my meds and went back into therapy. I'm 27 but I feel like I'm likely to get canned. Not sure what I'll do. Oh well.

It's not about age but skillset. At GM there are a lot of young employees that are in IT that have no experience and it shows when their are critical decisions to be made. I have also seen older workers not being technical enough and making bad decisions in critical situations. We will see what happens next week but dont think for second because you're a young employee you wont get cut. That's just being delusional.

At this point I think it's going to be more about salary than age but we'll see. They're trying to free up money

You don't know how good you have it working for a semi-American company such as GM until you go to a Chinese or Japanese or German company. Stick with it.

I just got an offer for 20% more at a chinese company just this Friday. I asked the hiring manager (I used to work with him @ GM - happens to be Chinese) to hold off on a response until wednesday. Would you work for a Chinese company? My sister says I'm crazy. But I'd hate to turn down the offer only to get axed.

You really have to be in your 20's and 30's with advanced degrees and an advanced skillset to make it through this round of cuts. Sounds like you fall short in all those areas. I'd start looking ASAP if I were you. Just being honest, sorry.

You're in your 40's, so you're likely canned. Best of luck.
