Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

New PMP Process

Will the new process be fair to employees or will it be used against employees as the old process was? Members of management used the old process to promote favorites who did not know the work. Those same managers used the process to penalize and eliminate knowledgeable experienced employees. As a long-term, 25, employee, I want to be judged on my capabilities instead of having to be concerned everyday about if I am liked.

There’s more to being a professional than being a technical expert. One needs to know how to work with different personality types in order to accomplish objectives. So if you’re dead-set on being an unlikable jerk, then you are a poor fit for Chevron. Best that you move on rather than slamming your colleagues and the PMP process.

@4suz nailed it. Sure you need to have some skills but likability has its place as well. If two candidates are similar in qualifications, I’m taking the likable one every time.

Note, this doesn’t seem to app,y for Senators and Congress critters. You can be a complete id--t and total jacka$$ and still get elected.

OK, so let me get this straight. You are concerned that you may be tremendously "disliked" in spite of your performance and want your lack of likability to be purged from your record, your history, and all social media (to use a modern phrase). And then be judged, graded and promoted based on what you consider important alone. Yet you are not a likable person.

I don't know about you, but rarely in history, at any company, in any profession, has an unlikable person been able to get much of a job, much less keep their job, if they continue to be an unlikable person who obviously can't get along with others.

Also, I have no interest in working with, around, or anywhere near unlikable people.

Some of you guys really have to get a clue. There's no rule or law that says Chevron has to hire you and keep you, just because you think so and that you feel you are qualified. Go find a job somewhere else if you are so special. When I hire employees, I want them to be competent, likable and qualified. And I can easily train a likable person if they are weak in some areas. The unlikable person can walk. And if this is news to any of you, that's pretty sad. Study up, you have some living and leaning to do!

Your supervisor and Chevron management do not pay too much attention to the PMP. For many years I just copied and pasted the same c-ap from my previous year final PMP, then modified it a little, changing a few words here and there. My supervisor never realized anything. Do you think they go back and check what you had put in it last year? Hell no. For the last 8 years in my same job position, I received nothing but 2 and 2+ rankings. Don’t rack your brain, people. The PMP is only more paperwork for the HR files. Do your job as best you can, don’t piss off anyone with a higher pay grade than you and once in a while pretend you care. You will be regarded as a solid performer as far as management will tell.

New Year, New Ranking.

Remember your teammates are actually your competition. You’ll need to become a shameless self promoter. It helps if you golf or hunt or have a diversity card. I’m sure the new VP will require BU’s to adhere to the same forced ranking process. It’s unfortunate that BU management will already have slotted their favorites in for the 1’s and 2+’s ever before any work is actually done in 2019.

What makes it even more unpalatable is the Performance Management Initiative feedback process we were asked to complete which then gave you the option to rank other employee comments. There were numerous comments on PMP ranking and a general consensus or theme, IMO, across all these comments was that the process is being unscrupulously applied by management.
