Maybe if power is spun off into it's own company? Would they be better? Do they have orders and cash to stay a float? Would they still be saddled with big debt? GE has Bill's to pay now. A promise that things look better in a few years doesnt pay a bill.

Power business is a scale driven business. Competitiveness and leadership in this industry requires a long term, sustained, high committed effort. It asks for investment, discipline and vision that beyond the next quarter, the next year and the next election cycle.
@1wyn your comment shows total ignorance of GE’s history. Power was, not long ago, THE primary revenue engine for GE. The business needs a resize but it can still be a hugely profitable business. Try to look beyond the end of your nose.
Oh, were we talking about GE Power? GE's red headed step-child, and especially turbines which has been a capital sink without end and cratering market share causing massive writedowns and factory shutdowns? The whole division is lucky GE simply hasn't just bought out Tesla and paid Elon Musk to throw as much money as he can to built a fully automated Gigafactory to try to replace the whole mess. It'd probably save about 90% of the investment, and robots don't need pensions or paychecks.
SG&A cuts have to come from somewhere to fill that large gaping hole caused by GE Financial fubar. The alternative is to have those cuts come from old experienced hands who actually know what they're doing.
chief engineers became useless when Sweet Lou C became chief and basically stripped them of all power. Now chiefs sit back and do nothing...even the TG process was wiped out!
@vbh, the problem is leadership didn’t have enough foresight to hire people then fire them a few weeks later. The gas turbine industry is not something that is forecasted a few weeks out. It is planned a year or more in advance. Leadership has 20/20 hindsight vision. No foresight vision.

Good, there are too many chief, principal and consulting engineers, so called protected class. It is about time to let go majority of them with high salary.
How low can GE go?
GE hired an engineer for a role in Greenville, South Carolina. He and his wife resigned from their previous employers in another state. They relocated to Greenville and bought a small house. Within one month of starting his new job at GE he was placed on the layoff list. Welcome to GE !!!!
@Wz4- I could not agree more. I left GE Power Greenville a couple months ago and during my time there it was evident that many hourly and salary employees at that location believed they were entitled to long term up to retirement employment by the company.

Sounds about right... Normally the first rounds of layoffs are retribution for past or where a new leader wants to eliminate future competition for their role or insure something is hidden.
Several decades with the company has taught me that the old timers who warned me about these practices when I first joined were not wrong.
Dirty deeds still get done dirt cheep and very quietly.

Where have you been for the last 50 years? Cradle to grave employment hasn't been done in America for generations.
