Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Assistant Manager cuts. (Real Info)

Ok. Here it is. All store managers have been sent a form where they are to rate all of their assistant managers in multiple performance categories (not a yearly evaluation form, this is different). All of the assistant managers for the entire market will then be banded together in one large pool. These results will then be calibrated. Each manager will fall into low, mid or high category. The low which will be around 20-25% will be terminated and given 60 days pay. For the mid and high, some managers will be allowed to stay in role at their current store and some will be forced to transition to another location. Department manager roles will be given more responsibility and roles combined with some of those positions going away also. Workplace will be tested by additional stores and ultimately cause the elimination of personnel but that layoff will not occur in Feb. New changes to attendance will be rolled out by February. Anyone who feels like this will not happen to me, trust that it will and is happening. Just be prepared and pray for the best. Walmart will also roll out a small pay increase for hourly associates and put the news of that out simultaneously to coincide with the mass manager layoffs to reduce the negative media. Store managers are not being told that the managers that they rank low will lose their job but the majority of managers based on the co manager layoff experience have figured it out at this point and know what is going on.

Store Managers supposedly didn't know anything about the Cos until after YBM. I can tell you as an ASM the handwriting has been there since last year when this happened to the Cos.

I took s conference call in the absence of our store manager this fall right before the holidays where they advised the store managers to have "the difficult conversations now before the holidays on job performance" i.e. Disciplinary Action conversations so they can fire someone for job performance when this rolls out vs. Having to pay a severance package.

If the company rolls out company wide day stock it will be EASY to cut 2-3 ASMs out of most stores..no need for O.N. ASMs.

We were asked last week about our mobility even though they have that information on our Global Information page under our former self evaluation site.

Bury your head in the sand if you want, but the same folks that I have heard from on past initiatives...Accounting, UPC, Cos, etc..are saying this Will happen no later than March.

I sure hope the store in Hiram get a new manager someone that cares about the store and tries to keep the store stocked with food and not empty boxes

I’m an assistant manager, my store manager said he did receive a packet with information regarding the ratings of his assistants. The market manager confirmed that changes are coming but would not go into detail. Our mapm market Apm manager just randomly quit. So change is coming I honestly hope I’m selected to be discarded. Been here 10years and every year it’s worse. I want to leave but I have kids and a wife and am the only source of income. I just need a push to leave due to me being to scared to find another job. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. Although I don’t think I would be Elemimenated I guess I’ll see.

I am a 9+ year employee, 3 year assistant, over 50 who just received a "development needed" rating which is a death sentence. It IS happening. Sadly, nothing about me, my productivity or quality of work has changed. I received good to excellent reviews for 8 years. It is a corporate decision which cannot be explained or justified...it's just business. No one truly matters except the customers and until they demand change, the corporation grinds on. It s---s having 9 loyal years set on fire like random yard debris, but it reminds me that nothing is certain. At least all the kids are grown and gone so it's just me and momma I have to worry about now.

I heard that bakery/deli will not be touched. That's all that I know. There is a lot of anxiety around in the store nowadays, people are concerned. I hope they act swiftly, people are going nuts.

This sounds fairly accurate because the SM are having to do evaluations and assoc potential surveys. The eval is for pay raises and potential is to show who has potential to advance.

@4isx if you look at "reactions" to the main post you'll notice that the 'up' and 'down' votes are rather balanced - for example, as of now it says "146 reactions (+67/-79)" - so 54% voted down and 46% voted up - I think a good chunk of folks believe this rumor.

We'll see what happens though.

Good luck all.

Why do you folks doubt this post?? It was foretold a little over a YEAR ago when Co-Managers were banded and downsized. This isn't a rumor. The 3rd phase will be hourly supervisors. (early 2020) I appreciate the heads-up. Who wants to be blindsided?

I guess they truly do not no who runs there stores , it’s not the store manager , who is rarely to be seen, or for that matter the so called cos, the ASMs handle everything, they are picking up the slack for everything, they don’t only manage they work , they bust there butts , trying to balance everything, they are the backbone ! If this happens you will see.

They are cutting people (and will continue to do so) due to their insane push to beat amazon. They have to make up for the lack of margin in e-commerce somewhere. Mark my words, this foolish pursuit of online sales will sink this company and amazon will be waiting to sweep up the crumbs.

Why does this surprise anyone ?

Walmart is not Sam’s Walmart anymore . It’s been about the bottom line since he died . I worked their 11 years from 1999 and over the years I saw it change all the time . Always cutting jobs to save money and the ones that have been their a long time with higher salaries are targeted. Write ups for stupid stuff that others don’t ever get written up for , favoritism, grudges , clicks, lies, deceit , targeting people that make a decent salary/ writing them up so they can fire them . That’s why they are changing the attendance policy so it will be easier to get rid of people. I know, it happened to me but they did me a favor, I hated my job and I got unemployment & severance pay . They had no real reason to fire me just some BS write ups so I got unemployment. I got a nice big check from profit sharing, an extra two weeks pay and unemployment for over s year until I found a part time job I liked .

Thank you Walmart because you did me a favor. Got my SSI at 62 and still can work a part time job if I want ! Though I haven’t worked in three years except for a little driving for Lyft ! Easy peasy ! My advice, get out while you can !

Has nothing to do with President Trump. WM will do themselves in and go full circle like every other retailer has UNLESS we go full online sales. We’re up 40% online sales. What’s that tell you. Box stores world wide are closing. It’s a normal cycle in business. Let life take take it’s course and enjoy this ride. Pray for our President and this country that’s where we should be concerned.

Remember store managers are paid to lie to us, even when we have go papers showing what is going to happen they lie about it. Then they tell us if we share the information we can be terminated. A SM will never admit to what they’ve been told.

Im a 30yr meat dp manager. Now ofcourse they call us "fresh dp managers" we are supposed to be able to work in meat, produce, and deli/bakery but none of them ever stepped foot in my meat department. I hate to brag but my dp is probably the best run in the store. I also have longest tenure. Their produce and deli..etc are a mess. If I even left meat for one day...it wouldn't have anyone to pick it up. Not sure where I am going with this but it would be nice to know my job was safe. No one else can do it better. The deli/bakery spot just opened....curious if they will actually fill it if maybe it will be going away and given to under my umbrella of all three areas? I mean they dont even cap produce right or keep anything in stock. I would gladly take over all three if I had to.

In our market, MHRM had all store managers survey ASMs for mobility/relocation info. Last time this happened several years back we had a huge shake up with ASMs moving to different areas/different stores based on mobility and skill level.

I am new to Walmart, I will say this. They should have formed a UNION years ago. There was a civil lawsuit against Walmart sometime ago, and I think the associates won. I heard that the attendance policy was changing? We can only hope that the new policy, will be fair, and that the managers will be fair to all associates.

I can speak about this from the Sam’s Club perspective. Last year, we were informed that to better balance and leverage talent that changes would take place and some would lose their jobs, others would move clubs and others would stay in place. When the actual moves were made, the club managers who were eliminated were long term cm and their clubs themselves were hitting budget on sales and profit. Two clubs were mostly cleared completely out of managers except the fresh manager who was under contract. Other managers were told they had to relocate. Once again, these were long term assistant managers of 10+ years and the clubs they were forced to go to were essentially right at the 45-50 mile mark. This wasn’t just happenstance; it was planned accordingly to cause these managers to quit. Naturally; some shorter term managers were released due to coachings but the majority of the carnage was on the long term assistant managers and club managers. Currently; on the sam’s Club side, the rumors of this occurring again are becoming prevalent with the prevailing theory being more on relocating managers out of buildings that they’ve been in along time than actual termination. There is a market manager meeting next week in Dallas for sam’s, so I’m sure the details will be leaked soon.

Understandable that there is so much emotion about this but we need to keep in mind that this is all just rumor and speculation at this point.

I’ve yet to see any ASM say they have taken a survey or a store manager say they have filled one out on here. And I have not spoken to a store manager or ASM yet in person who has.

Could it happen? Yep.

But the original post that kicked this whole thing off was not accurate within the first few sentences where it says this process has already started across the company. It has not. That should be at least a reason to question this as opposed to assuming it must be true IMO.

Dear SM your reply is absolutely absurd. How easily we forgot the massive cut at Sam’s. Just ask a 35 year associate and 20 plus year club manager with net sales of over 100,000 and former club of the year winner how this will not happen ! You are blinded by the koolaid the give you to drink every day. Ask the single mom asst manager with three kids how real it is because the MM who was and is a power hungry maniac if her authority is question and rates her low is let go. I pray it doesn’t happen to you but keep on drinking the koolaid and you won’t see it coming.

Why blame Trump ??? WM has lost their mind trying to keep up with Amazon ! The WM leadership making $250,000 into the millions a year are behind this. Margin is all they care about. It started with elimination of profit sharing and has grown into a giant black hole were people’s lives are ruined and families hurt. They talk about the pay raises and all the great things they have done yet elimate thousand of jobs to cover their PR cost. Sam and Helen Walton would be so saddened about the way their associates and managers are treated. They have a Ethics department because of all the crazy stuff that went on yet it’s a joke. It’s like three blind mice. Put up a front to the customers and government yet it’s all about PR not taking of their associates. There needs to be a serious investigation into their treatment of vendors, age, s-x and changing of policy to benifit the millionaire leadership

It’s a deceitful company. 25 plus years with them and boom gone. I had superior evaluations and great numbers. They use their leave policy to get rid of higher paid managers so they can add lower paid. Profits before People. The federal government should investigate them for age, and s-x discrimination that they call “ staffing reductions “ instead of fighting between both parties. If you work for WM sooner or later you will be forced out for lower paid managers or hourly associates.
