Mattel’s revival plan

Found this article that pinpoints the pros and the cons of the revival plan presented by the CEO that puts a lot of hopes into the movie division and sets the transition to Mattel's media content. This plan is, no doubt a necessity, taking into account the shrinking of the toys market and the need to provide some content that could appeal to new generations. On the other hand, beting the future of the whole company on the Barbie movie seems to be a little risky, not to mention the potential success of the movie is very much in question.

Great because that’s what most kids want to see.

As one of the most inclusive and diverse shows on television, Netflix’s She-Ra reboot is a huge step for LGBTQ representation on TV.

She-Ra looks like Robin from the old Teen Titans with a cape of blonde hair

Girls might know it’s a girl but they won’t buy a toy of it. Not sure what times you’re referring to but girls still play with dolls kind of the same way. They don’t care about fake empowerment shows. They already know they’re empowered. They don’t need a t-shirt that says so or an androgynous doll with a sword to do that. Girls will buy a visually appealing product and it doesn’t need a stupid feature.

@WHSdvPN-4gyz - For starters get with the times and get over it. Little girls can tell the character is a girl. The show is entertaining enough for kids to binge watch and be left wanting more. Adults are the ones more hung up about the look, or in the case of Mattel, whine about product potential.

The theme is about girl empowerment and diversity not big knockers and stereotype looks. Quit b--ching about it and figure out how to make a good goddamned toy for f--- sake...

Barbie movie:

Hey I’m blonde and i’ve got every material thing you can imagine. And I travel everywhere with no tangible source of income. Oh and I have friends and sisters who are all as equally vapid and materialistic. My pets are equally as Caucasian as I am. We’re going to go through some manufactured trials and tribulations that I will naturally overcome not due to my smarts but due to the idiocy of everyone around me. And I will end up right back where I was with no consequences and not a single wrinkle on my plastic face.

Can’t wait!

In case you have no recollection of history she-ra and he-man were both intended to sell product. If you want to make a show purely for political purposes and a bs storyline then yes they’ve succeeded. She ra doesn’t have to be curvy or wear a short skirt. But damn she at least has to be a girl no? Hence the name “she-ra”? Not He-ra.

Seriously they went out of their way to make her look androgynous. How is that aspirational? How is that look even cool in a general sense? I mean everyone is wearing bike shorts. This show runner is clearly into spanxx.

The Barbie Movie will be the final nail in the coffin for the most despised brand in the world. Mattel will not be able to stop itself from risking everything on a last ditch effort to survive. This movie can’t help but be poor and below expectations as you still have RD and LMc still employed at the company who have done nothing but accelerate the decline of the brand.

@WHSdvPN-1tis - Considering this iteration of She Ra has been very well rated and likely wasn't intended to move product, I don't think this person was an id--t by departing from the comic book female hero stereotype image. The true id--ts behind the She Ra brand aren't at Dreamworks.

@WHSdvPN-fkw - Wow...just wow. If you're still at Mattel...please leave.

mattel's strategy is to give their IP to film companies who will fund and make movies with it. Mattel only makes money if the movie is a hit through back end profit sharing. That means first a movie has to actually has to be released and then it has to be a hit before Mattel sees any meaningful money. Are there any movies in production with release dates anytime soon? If not this is just another BS PR story. Mattel will be bankrupt in 6 months. Who cares about a Barbie movie that may or may not be released 2 years from now.

Pshhh. We can’t even manage to figure out a she-ra product line and that content we probably didn’t even pay for.

But then again who wants a transgender doll in biker shorts with a sword.

Nice idea, but no one makes money in content anymore except for Disney and its tie in properties. Even DreamWorks gave up the ghost, and Netflix is a money pit of debt. It's Google/Facebook/Apple raking it all in. Mattel undoubtedly has properties it can leverage, but it needs to turn DC Super Hero Girls into the MCU or something, because kids give up toys the second they get a smartphone.
