Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

No layoffs so far?

Is it just me, or has this week been really quiet when it comes to layoffs? Should we take it as a good sign that we might be done for now?

@W82PtxC-qbw - Cisco in the past has done work force reductions where it was x% across the board and not under-performing product lines. They used to have a policy of letting go the bottom 5% before the "People Deal" came along and we no longer have rankings (that the employees see at least). I'm not sure if Cisco is getting better or worse at handling the annual (or quarterly) reductions.

@W82PtxC-fsp - No one allows people to work for free. In Cisco's past, I recall that Cisco would cut pay (especially among the upper end) in order to avoid laying people off. It pre-dates my joining Cisco, but I heard about it from the (then) long-time employees back in the early-mid 2000's.

In my case, and in other's I knew, the employee would be let go and a contractor would be brought in within 30-60 days. It's dis-heartening when you don't get a choice to keep your job, but in a different classification (i.e. red badge). I have to look for a new job. Cisco has to find a qualified person to back-fill me and bring them up to speed on Cisco's ways of doing work, get their accounts/accesses setup, etc. That's a lot of wasted effort and man-hours lost compared to just converting me back to red badge. The sad thing is having to tell recruiters that I can't interview for the role they're trying to fill because it WAS MY OLD ROLE and I'm NOT ALLOWED to be re-hired in any classification for 6 months.

I've had several jobs since being let go from Cisco. Some were better than others, but none were as good as Cisco's. Wages might be the same or better. The facilities might be newer or fancier. But the stress level was worse at all of them.

they can give an option to the affected ones to work for free until their budget improves and resume their salaries when Cisco actually starts hiring again. This would be far better than completely laying someone off who has been loyal until now and has done everything for the Org. This is because along with LR going on now, there are lot of open jobs listed . its like hiring + firing going on paralelly, of course in diff teams .

Cisco Report Annual Earnings to the New York Stock Exchange this evening....We certainly hope for the best, but this may just be the quiet before the storm....Good Luck everyone & God Bless!

Sorry to hear about any of our esteemed colleagues being impacted, anywhere, but we have to admit that all companies must trim their work forces and under-performing product lines to remain competitive in an ever-changing world. Cisco Systems is no Exception to that rule.
