Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Seriously, though...if DeVry makes it out the other end of this, it needs to change some things...here are a couple of suggestions...identify our best academic program...then go out and get the very best faculty in those fields. Money should be no object. Time for research and a stipend for conference travel should be included. Then, when you get them...promote the heck out of it...to the point where someone interested in that particular field would crawl on their knees to be in the same room with that person. Of course, you'd need support staff...so you'd have to clean out the current dean of faculty and the so-called deans for academic excellence, and get real academics in there...people who understand that the secret to success is to get the very people and then turn them loose.

to offset their liabilities arising out of their contractual obligations for severances and running a very expensive teach-out program. Cogswell has no such obligations and would probably try to make a buck through a slash and burn liquidation.

Subprime mortgages were given to people that the banks knew would never repay the loans and would end up in foreclosure. Subprime degrees were awarded to people who the companies knew would never repay their student loans and would not be able to find jobs because the worthless education they received did not give them any useful skills. The article by Shaulis is correct, there is a slow melt down going on just like the mortgage meltdown in 2008.

@UjNP9Gz-mql I don't think it's a dinosaur so much as an institution which has learned the hard way that you can't carry water on both shoulders. You can either be a business or you can be a university. You can't be both, and, ultimately, DeVry turned out to be neither.

Yes , indeed quality of education is a dinosaur. MCE scores are what drives managers to beat up on faculty.No need to teach, just make students feel good.

Sadly, students can get the same feeling watching a comedy for less.

It used to be an adage that the quality of a school, any school, was measured by the quality of its faculty and the success of its students. At DeVry, these took a seat well to the back of the bus (if they were ever on it) to money. Students were not regarded for their potential, only for the dollars they represented. And faculty had even less value. We were not well-regarded, especially those in the humanities. Does anyone remember the slogan, "doing well by doing good"? It was cringe worthy when DeVry was at its pinnacle of success, an expression of ludicrous hubris. Those still in the machine: what news?
