Thread regarding Siemens layoffs

Massive layoff at Siemens AG

This is going to be absolutely brutal! Nearly 20,000 office jobs will most likely be eliminated as part of the latest restructuring/efficiency drive/whatever they're calling it these days.

At least those with manufacturing jobs are safe. Everybody else, especially personnel, finance, and legal, brace for impact.

I hope we find out where and who soon. Wait will be excruciating.

It's been over 3 weeks since Siemens Gamesa announced layoffs. When will we know if we are going to be "fired" or "relocated"? And, why doe it take so long?

After 27 years, I was part of one of the RIF waves of layoffs over a period of weeks at Siemens Digital Industries Software early 2020. There is nothing about it in the news. It makes those of us laid off after a lifetime of loyal service feel even more discarded.

Are there non-US Americans?

Siemens will have what US Americans call a yard sale. All assets must go. Liquidation sale!

The company has completely changed their vision which no longer includes the employee or customer. It’s all about revenue! Yes equally important, but it’s all about balance. Siemens is completely off balance! Very sad to see a company that you helped grow over the past 20 years being destroyed. Maybe I never saw the big 2020 vision, but one thing I know for sure.. happy employees and satisfied customers are what drive your revenue. Without them, you have nothing! Take care of them!

After 19 yrs with Siemens, I've seen layoffs and hiring frenzy. No one is safe from a layoff. The company is trying to meet goals for Vision 2020. I knew back in FY13-14 reductions in employees would happen. The co did not anticipate the significant downturn in certain business lines.

The new hire mentioned older workers are not innovative. Not true, Siemens itself is slow with innovation. I was on several "innovation teams" with a diverse team of employees, nothing was accomplished.

@UOgMAO5-kgfk: There is a big layer of an aged staff, I agree. I see what you're saying, ultimately nothing wrong with that. Heck, when I hit my 60s, I hope I can still keep working until I decide to retire. But I have noticed the older ones I work with are set in their ways and don't want to go along with the changes that the company is seeking. Younger workers are being brought in, even middle-aged people who have the skill set needed. The culture I'm sensing is that the powers-that-be what to be bring in people from the outside who can really help bring about the changes the company wants. This big layoff coming up, however big it turns out, will really weave out the long time employees who can no longer adapt as well as redundancies that others here have mentioned.

I agree with the poster below. Older workers are being targeted. Frankly, some are justified in the sense that these workers refuse to change, have no more enthusiasm, and the ones I know even said they just want to milk the routine by riding it out until they retire. Some are also good workers who want the volunteer retirement package. But the bigger issue here is the redundancy that gets uncovered when they reorg everything according to the vision 2020+ initiative. Obviousy, layoffs are looming.

"Being bitter has nothing to do with it. Just stating facts. There were seasoned engineers, CPAs, and Phd's that were deemed replaceable. and were sh*t canned with the interns."

Dude, you have serious comprehension problems. No wonder the powers-that-be will be dumping you because you've got serious communications issues. I wasn't even denying that everybody is ultimately replaceable. We're all replaceable. But, Mr. A Whole, I'll give another shot explaining things to you: I never said anything about thinking I’m safe just because I’m a new hire. As for you being bitter, of course you are. Or else you wouldn't be running back here in your hysterics. You just don't realize it because you've been drinking the funny stuff to deny yourself from seeing who you really are.

"Your developer job will get outsourced eventually."

Of course it will. All these high tech companies are doing it. But for now, I along with other new talent in cloud computing are being brought on board because, at this stage, the company values what we bring to the table. Listen pal, I've been laid off before. I know what it's like. And as I came on board here at Siemens, I've already got my exit plans in the works--because anything can happen. At the same time, I can see why all those seasoned engineers, CPAs, and Phds you mentioned were canned. I see a lot of old time dinosaurs here at Siemens who are set in their ways. Things move so slow here because these old timers can't innovate. We're talking grandpa-looking people. You're probably one of them, considering that you sound like an angry old man. Have a good life, pal.

Hey new hire, the Kool aid fountain needs a refill. You're up.

“Don't think being a new hire will save you either. ”

If you took the time to read my post carefully, I never said anything about thinking I’m safe just because I’m a new hire. You’ve got issues, pal, with your bitter attitude.

I do agree with the other post below about elimination of redundancy. That’s typically the first wave of layoffs. But over at the PLM division, where I’ll be, they’re hiring vigorously. They need more skilled developers in this push for gearing up for the cloud. Good luck to all.

20,000 out of 376,000 full time employee worldwide, came down to 5% layoff of it's total worldwide work force. Restructuring will come with elimination of redundancy within the organization, plus the business down cycle in the Power Generation segment, the number seems not that far fetch.

Google it new hire. It's part of the 2020 plan. Don't think being a new hire will save you either. We had new hires go down with the veterans too. Only difference is they got no severance but the at least the veterans did.

I just got hired. My start date is in a week. What is the source of this 20,000 employee layoff? This is making me nervous.

I was there over 12 years and still have some contacts “in the know”. The main thing to remember is to not believe a word that they say. I have seen some unbelievable stuff that they did all the while saying how much they “care” about their employees. They are now saying to not believe the 20,000 person reduction. BELIEVE IT! And not only that, manufacturing WILL BE included no matter what they say. Anyone employed by Siemens should worry. Dresser, Alstom, the Siemens side of Gamesa and anyone who is within the PG should be updating their resumes now.

Those still employed do not believe management when they tell you, your jobs are fine. These same con artists strung the Houston office along for the better part of two years. Every Friday without fail we were reassured at the office meeting to remain calm and ignore the rumors about our office closing. Then one fateful day, top management and human resources showed up and announced that the office closing, and that we all knew it was coming. DON'T BELIEVE THEM! If you have an opportunity to get out, take it while you can.

The arrogance of Siemens upper management is overwhelming. They preach pride and ownership but insult you dragging out layoffs for years. Never realizing the low moral has created an even larger loss in productivity. Tell employees to cut spending while posting photos and stories about having select management mtgs in Berlin while drinking champagne and staying at expensive resorts. PG posting profit 3 quarters in a row but need to layoff so they get bigger bonuses! How greedy can you be? We trimmed our budgets "right sized" the staffing to ensure profit and still want more. S--- it
