Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

What happened to job security?

Times have changed at GE so freaking much. I used to like working here. Not so much anymore. Especially not with the eternal axe hanging above my head every single day.

Anybody believes that a time will come again when we we will be able to stop worrying all the time about having a job tomorrow?

@SZrPZwZ-1ifz you must be a legacy guy with a pension and $12 more an hour for the same work.

Well if corporate America could take care of their employees and not create a competitive wage than the so called poor/middle class wouldn’t have to use a credit card for medical and dental, car repairs on top of the cost of living increases in society.

The same people who complain about job security are the ones who roll over a credit card balance every month.

Pro tip: Get out of debt and get six months of expenses in the bank. Job security becomes GE's problem, not yours.

Machinists are skilled and have options. The Arsenal and many other local employers will gladly hire former GE machinists at good wages.

A lower skill job (19 rate or lower) will have difficultly in finding a job that pays as well as GE.

Despite what everyone thinks, T-Rates are well paid; find a local job posting for semi-skilled labor that pays anything close to a T19.

The machinists are getting screwed too.

Why do you think that you have some sort of "right" to lifetime employment?

Regarding the self interest mentioned in the first response: very true, that includes continuously upgrading your skill set and education, so that you can provide value to a future employer if you lose your current job.

Too many union workers in Schenectady have been on cruise control for years, assuming they would never have to look for another job. GE offers excellent tuition reimbursement and the machinist training program was available for years. How many union members bothered to take advantage of either one?

Barely graduating high school and performing what can be considered semi-skilled labor isn't going to land you a $25+ per hour job outside of GE. A few people may get lucky and land one of the few union manufacturing jobs in the area with similar wages. The rest will be in for a painful reality check.

We have started to look for dirt....burn them before they burn us. They got us here.

Your frustration is totally understandable - at my site, a similar "fear" prevails. Its just the new reality. There is no higher virtue.

Its hard - find a way to manage the stress around the new reality. Take care of yourself physically and emotionally and always look after your own self intrest.
