Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Charging for cups and forks

State Farm is pinching pennies so bad that they now charge $.10 for a cup of water and $.05 for a plastic fork.

If it makes you feel any better...the cups are $0.10 but the water is still free...for now

Proximity: I’m sorry that your friends are being laid off. It’s a bad situation to be in, but all of this is being done in an effort to “cut costs”. This thread isn’t about the $.10 cups or $.05 utensils. We can all afford it. So we’re not whining. This thread is about the principle, and pointing out the ridiculous extent that the company will go to “cut costs”. All the way down to the nickel.

@SYc84C5-hgm - I wrote the prior post about Proximity and I believe that this whole thread misses the point of what is taking place in the company. I have a number of friends across the country that are losing their jobs because of the random nature of the Proximity re-org, and in this thread people are whining about paying for plastic utensils. Seriously? You can go to Wal-mart and buy a 100 pack of the "good" plastic for around $5.00. As to the bathroom comment, yes, I do use public bathrooms, which are few and far between in my territory and a dime would be a cheap price to pay if the need were great enough. As to intelligence and vocabulary, I guess you showed me with your witty put down. I tremble at your intellect. Here's your participation trophy...

I don’t know that much about the Proximity role, but doesn’t State Farm provide you with a company car or pay for mileage? Imagine if they took that away from you.

Or imagine if the gas station that you’re stopping at started charging you $.10 to use the bathroom. Sure you can afford it, but would that make you feel like a valued customer? I’m guessing you’ll claim that you don’t use gas station bathrooms, but I imagine others in your role do.

The point here is not that we have to pay $.10 for a cup, the point is that State Farm is slowly stripping everything away from employees and creating a toxic environment.

Back in the day, State Farm used to provide milk to employees to keep them strong and healthy. Now they can’t even provide a cup for us to drink water out of.

So go ahead and call it being a “snowflake” (a popular term used by those who have limited vocabulary and intelligence), because you’ve obviously missed the point.

To the previous poster: You accepted a job that puts you on the road. Your situation isn't really relevant to this conversation, unless you'd like to hang some plastic utensils from your rearview mirror or something.

True, it’s owned by Eurest, but why can’t State Farm subsidize it? They can provide daily lunches to Blue Owl / HiRoad employees, but can’t provide a few cups and plastic utensils to Corporate employees? Seems silly to me.

How were they able to do it before?

Not to mention, Eurest makes a ton of money from all the drink carts where drinks are left. All of those sodas and waters that didn’t get used, guess where they go? Back to Eurest stock. And if you think they’re giving the department a credit back on those unused drinks, think again. They’re basically double charging SF for the drinks, yet they can’t give us complimentary cups and utensils. Again, seems a bit silly and the math doesn’t add up, not to mention, the logic.

Eurest runs the cafeteria, not corporate. They have to pay their employees and rent to SF. It's obviously a problem

I find it ironic that Corporate SF is nickel and diming us for paper cups and plastic utensils, yet here are some of the perks listed in the HiRoad jobs online:

“daily catered lunch, wellness reimbursement & on-site shower, four weeks of vacation, six weeks of parental leave, panoramic views, and more.”

I used to take a few plastic utensils before SF started charging, but it’s only because I wanted to have a stash at my desk for when I would occasionally forget to bring them when I brought my lunch and SAT AT MY DESK TO EAT IT.

Now that they started charging us for plastic utensils, I NO LONGER EAT AT MY DESK! I now go to the cafeteria and usually take hour+ long lunches. I’ll even sit in the bathroom for a half an hour or so just to get away.

If they’re going to be a-holes about charging for a stupid plastic fork when they offer FREE LUNCHES, ON-SITE SHOWERS AND FOUR WEEKS OF VACATION at HiRoad, then this is what they’re going to get in return. And I know for a fact that I’m not the only one rebelling.

If you don’t treat your employees like people, if you don’t treat them fairly, if you constantly create an atmosphere of mistrust, you’ll get that in return.

The phrase “Treat people the way you want to be treated” is very appropriate here. It goes without saying that the employees will reflect SF’s nontrusting and bad behavior back on them.

I’ve seen so many people take handfuls of plastic ware at a time. I wish people would quit stealing and screwing it up for everyone.

You would think they are a start-up dotcom company rather than a 95 year old Fortune 500 company. But hey, the feminine products are still no-charge. (Only because MT hasn't been told!)
