Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

Why are you still working at UoP?

I worked for UoP for nearly 10 years. Why are you folks still working there? You obviously know how horrible it is. The grass is much greener outside of that life-s---ing place. Granted, 5 weeks vacay, and a steady paycheck is hard to let go of, but there are so many jobs where you can make just as much money(not necessarily the vacay), and be happier! I HONESTLY believe, and I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I believe UoP will go down/be sold off in 5 years or less. It simply cannot continue to operate the way it is. If I were you, and if you're not working in a specialty department, I'd update your resume/linked In profile, and start looking. Better to be prepared then to be grasping for something to cling to in the cold, dark waters or unemployment. Best of luck to you all still there. I wish you the best.

Yes, I too have wondered about the metaphysical and ethereal aspects of remaining at this institution.

Stockholm syndrome aside, I have come to the studied conclusion that, despite all arguments to the contrary, you and I and so many others at this potemkin village hot mess are simply a--holes.

Simple as that.

People stay in dysfunctional relationships because of fear, insecurity, or conditioning that prompts the individual to remain because it is known and familiar. Why would anyone at the director and above level leave if they can hang on and end up with a severance. Bailing before having another job is just plain stupid. People can tolerate hostility and dysfunction if the reward is sufficient. It is a cost/benefit equation. What remains now are people who are merely hanging on and waiting for a parachute of some kind. Why not? Even if jobs are plentiful there remains an element of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

That is the $64,000 question of the century. Why? Now that I have thought about it for a while... There are NO good reasons to stay working for such a hostile and dysfunctional "Company". None.

Remember when the former President sent an email out asking that we should not refer to the university as a "company"?

Well.... Guess what, it always been more or a company than a school. And now... Look at the pirates and megalomaniacs that still don't understand employee health-work-life balance... Why should they care?

It's a disaster...and the best way to describe why I am still there... Is because of the brainwashing. It's classic Stockholm syndrome here... Where we actually start identifying with our captors. They say green is really blue and even though you know they are 100% wrong...you go along with their b---s---. All because you don't want to be jobless.

Not anymore people... I know too many that have had their lives "changed" by this disorganization and they all have one thing in common... They are so much more happy to be out!!!

Soon.... I will also be free of this madness. There IS life outside this COMPANY.

Oh, pardon my harshness. I stand corrected.

I meant to say just your bloodsucking flat salary.

Pathetic!

5 years? You’re too nice. The company won’t make it to that. I am waiting on my severance. Until then, I am riding the gravy train like VP’s. Minimal work, maximum pay and benefits.

Well that was just harsh @SJHe9q3-1ygg. Just bc folk work for UOP doesn't make them bad people. They're not even paid on commission - just flat salary.

Spot on, SJHe9q3 & @SJHe9q3-ffz. The economy in the Phoenix area is ramping up. The HR department at UOP was torn apart a few years ago. The previous ethical staff are gone and it is now being run by the VPs.

More layoffs are coming in the May/June timeframe.

Be prepared and update your resume and LinkedIn account.

I totally agree. Have the foresight to get out rather than go down with the ship. I got out about 5 months ago. I quickly realized that UOP was not a normal working environment! Instead, it was borderline hostile. There are so many better opportunities at companies that treat you well. Don't stay somewhere just for a few extra vacation days. It's just not worth it. Life is short enough without having the stress of UOP shorten it even more.

Now is the time to get out and do better things for yourself and your loved ones. The economy isn't going to get much better than it is today. Good jobs are everywhere so update that resume and get started. If you applied for four jobs each day, five days a week, you will have applied for 80 jobs at the end of the month... Don't you think your odds are good that you will land one of those jobs? I do! Don't wait... start today and keep your eye on the prize.
