Thread regarding Sears layoffs

How can people still be surprised?

Seriously, one of the articles on the latest closing announcement has a guy express his shock at finding out his store is closing.

How? How can you work at Sears at this time and not be completely aware of the fact that there is no such a thing as safe store? And that with time (much less than some think) all of them will close?

How?

Most of the ones there now haven't crossed paths with the ones pushed out of the way during the 80s and 90s that actually made a good living there.

Those of us that realized that Sears was a losing proposition once you approached age 50 or more than 15 bucks an hour weren't there to earn them.

Like they say, ignorance is bliss

The international suspension of disbelief. Like when you're watching a horror movie. You know what you're seeing but you choose to believe what the movie is telling you.

@SJGHr7S-yiz Might depend on each store, but in my store I would say 70 percent of the work force their actually relies on the income to support themselfs and their family. When the company goes under they are going to be hurt the most its just sad.

Most of the people at my store are ages 16-23. Most of the old career people have been pushed out or retired in the last few years. Most young people could care less if the store closes because they are always looking for another, better paying job. I'm only surprised when someone who uses this job as their only means of support and has a family is caught off guard by a closing.

@SJGHr7S-nkd Pretty much sums it up with your statement. I also don't get how people working in the company don't see that company can shut down anytime as well as the actual store. Anyone heavily relying at Sears needs to start applying some how course their is exception (some people are waiting for unemployment or just do it to make extra cash and kill time.

@SJGHr7S-cac Agree in it to I don't know why anyone heavily relying at Sears doesnt go and search for something more stable.

I have zero sympathy for people who are not prepared for their store to be closed.

I speak as someone whose store recently closed. I knew it was coming and planned accordingly.

If this company ever stabilizes, it will be as an online retailer only.....Brick and mortar stores will be gone from the company.

@r7S, some people keep their head down and do the best they can to make their store the best it can be. They know that the company has been closing stores, but they just focus on what they can do to make the company stronger. It still comes as a shock when it's actually your store. It is probably also shocking because Sears Holdings just reported a profit last month. I know there is much talk about the tax benefits, but the fact of the matter is that Sears Holdings did massively decrease it's loss even without the tax benefit if I remember correctly. I do hope this is a company stabilizing and getting ready for the next glorious phase in it's long and storied history.
