Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Promotion via demotion

This is a great company to work for, said no one ever. Applied for a promotion only to find out the starting salary is about $10,000 less than what I currently make. How can this company expect their tenured management to stay with this f---ing company. Maybe it’s time to abandon ship. Selling candy is a better option and pays more.

I work for the company still and Am actively looking for another job. But just last week, I watched my RM and HR fill a SM 3 position, which requires a bachelors degree according to the description, with a women who doesn’t have an degree at all, and was up for termination this time last year. Then they gave her full time hourly ops manager position to a student employee, and are working on giving her Text manger position to another student employee.

Sh-- like this is why we are good managers are leaving. Cause the lazy, incompetent and unqualified a-- kissers are the only ones being promoted and rewarded.

Oh and btw, the It department has it that if you try to access this site from a Unit on the Follett network, it automatically redirects you to the Follett main store selection site. Gee paranoid are they?

I don't know if other companies operate the same way, but the powers on high are the most incompetent boobs to ever soil the retail industry. They are absolutely clueless when it comes to running a bookstore in today's industry. And yes, they are so blind when it comes to harvesting talent. I have seen excellent, top notch managers, get sh-- on, while people who are in way over their heads (and have the horrible results to prove it) are looked upon as golden children. When I see the respect the RMs and GVPs give these incompetent morons, all I can do is shake my head in amazement.

The last 2 comments are 100% on point. Realize that this is the mantra of the company and do all you can to get out asap.

That last comment is the truest thing ever written about working at Follett. Incompetence rises while excellence rots. God forbid you ever rock the boat and challenge the status quo, nothing you do will ever make amends for that. I can’t imagine why the company doesn’t do better?

The comment about 1% was a joke, right?

Look, don't worry about it. We all know how this company operates. Just lose an account and you're golden. I can think of at least 6 managers in the last five years who s---ed at their jobs so badly that they lost their accounts. And how were they penalized? One became an RM, one became an RCMS, one became a store director, and three were promoted to become SMs of even larger stores. And the managers of the most successful stores in the region? They got nothing. It's all about playing the game. Play the game and kiss a--, and no matter how sh--ty a job you do, you will be fine. Do an exemplary job, but rock the boat ever so slightly, and it's a career death sentence.

Yes, $48,000 ain't so hot...but if all goes well, you might receive an additional 1% of your salary under the short-term incentive plan.

Yep. You can't get any good talent for the going rates... $48,000 for a $5 million store??? What a joke... especially for a manager that's been with the company for many years and has the education to back it up. Follett wants drones that won't challenge the status quo. Retail is no longer a profession, especially at the store level. Get out now. You won't regret it.

For more than 5 years now positions have been eliminated or consolidated. As people have been driven/abuised out, laid off/fired/purged, the job has been downgraded in status and pay.

It's part of the larger cultural change. follett, at some point, looked at their employees as assetts. For at least 5 years, follett has viewed employees as liabilities/expenses. Expenses must be cut.

So, your reaction (to leave) is spot on. It is time to leave. In fact, if you've been tapped for "promotion", but you turned it down due to the pay cut, there is pretty good possibility that your salary has already been targeted as being too high. It is time to leave.

That is beyond screwed up. But we all know that this company doesn't value talent, hard work, or even results. They value people who know how to fall into line and kiss a--. BTW BS is a major f---ing pain in the a--. Knows nothing about priorities. The ultimate paper pusher. Cares about useless metrics and not what's happening in the real world.
