Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

Laid Off from B&N

Receiving manager at a B&N just got laid off, from what I could tell it's pretty far reaching where the layoffs are happening. Best of luck to all affected.

the best part is now the merch manager is being redefined as an "inventory and sales" position. in smaller stores than means the merch in in charge of receiving.

Not "technically" ALL Rec Manager (Former one here myself) but every store under $8mil lost their Rec Managers, most if not all leads and digital leads. So basically all of us save for a few lucky ones in big enough stores but I'm sure their life will s--- as their staffs will be reduced.

Severance as I understood it is 1 week for every year you were with the company.

S---s, sh--ty way to handle it and all our workload is getting dumped onto the Merch Managers who received revised job descriptions today which now include everything in receiving not done by untrained newbie booksellers.

Aggravating and disappointing but as someone who came to B&N after being at Borders till the end all the signs have been there since at least 3ish years ago. They're making all the same moves Borders did right up until they closed down. A few other Borders employees and I have been joking about it for years now that its like some kind of sick deja vu watching it all happen but this time knowing what we're looking at.

Good luck to everyone who got laid off today and everyone still holding on. This ride s---s and I don't envy anyone who knocks thrown off or stays on till the end. Its rough, its sad and ultimately disappointing to watch. Just hang on to the family and friends you've made over the years, if my Borders friends are any indication after all these years you'll stay in touch.

I loved my job as a Head cashier. I was called in on my day off to what I thought would be just some morning help. Left 15 minutes later trying not to cry in front of now ex co-workers. This decision makes no sense to me especially with inventory in a week. I couldn't believe there was no option to continue even in a lower position. Good luck to all affected.

Same here, laid off after 16.5 years. What’s the company thinking? Some, if not most of the best employees in the stores are head cashiers, digital leads, and receiving managers. Senseless. Just absolutely senseless.

My boss told me 16 weeks pay. I think same pay rate but it was hard to get it all in when I was crying. Mine is 16 due to years worked and PTO left. Also I keep insurance until severance is over.

I called HR and they were only able to tell me they'd be sending out severance packets and to call back if I hadn't received mine before Tuesday or Wednesday next week. But they could not tell me what I could expect for severance. The uncertainty is making me sick. Has anyone heard anything concrete?

Yes. I got laid off this morning. I'm a receiving manager... Oops I mean I WAS a receiving manager at a store in SWFL. My heart is crushed. I'm trying to be an adult about the whole thing. I absolutely loved my job! I had been with the company for 12 years. 10 years as receiving manager. I've never been laid off before but honestly I did see this coming when 2 weeks ago I was told that we can't order any more paper! That has since been redacted but we were all in shock. I don't normally toot my own horn but they lost a dedicated employee with an excellent work ethic. So long.

From what I (a receiving manager until this morning) was told, it's all receiving managers, head cashiers, and digital leads companywide.

Head cashier position at B&N also laid off. No warning, what an unpleasant surprise. Clocked in just to be told I'm out of a job.
