That’s the problem with so many folks, putting money ahead of everything in life. Forget about the Masters degree or switching your degree of study. Ask yourself what is it you really enjoy doing, and pursue that. Enjoying your work is like not working at all. Getting paid for what you enjoy doing is even better. Those are ‘wise words’ for everyone to consider following.

You can learn coding on your own, that’s not a problem. If you want to go back to school go for chemical engr. It will give you the broadest application for the future. And learn stat and probabilities, that will put you in front of 75% of the ppl you’re competing with. I would stay away from computer engineering or coding. You always be competing with individuals that do not have a degree. I’ve seen some badass coders that never even set foot on a college campus.

@9qwp, I know this to be true. After all, I worked with Chevron at the downtown office for many years and witnessed a lot of slacking going on. Especially on Fridays where a worker’s boss had that Friday off, they would filter out of the office much earlier than 3:00 p.m. This behavior stems from a lack of accountability that is pervasive in Chevron.

I worked in the Louisiana and Smith street towers in Houston and I can tell you first hand that 50% or more of the employees put in 8 hours a day at most. On any Friday, 50% or more of the employees would be gone for the day after lunch. The 110% employees were definitely the exception.

If the OP was putting in 9 honest hours a day then that's an enormous amount more than the majority of you losers on this site. Carry on with your meaningless hypocritical drivel, though, if it makes you feel better and helps your living in denial conditions while you await your turn on the chopping block.

I think this is the problem; no one wants an "average" engineer. Anyone in a managerial position wants someone that will go the “extra mile.” I have had four interns in the last several years and three out of four had this attitude. They just wanted to know what the minimum effort was to get their projects completed and be done with them. Truth is that there is so much to learn that if you gave it 110% every day, you still would have much more to learn at the end of every day. Also, I have noticed many little cues with young people today: one intern would text while I talked to him and when I stopped talking he would tell me to continue because he was still listening (as if he could do both at the same time). Another kept reminding me about how much he hated doing presentations, and I am thinking he wanted me to tell him that he didn’t have to do his at the end of the summer. I think that what young people don’t understand is that completion of a class, degree, or some horizons program isn’t about completion; it’s about what you got out of it while you were there. So people here are complaining about his/her grammar? This did not happen overnight; this happened over a lifetime. This is why no one wants to hire this individual; there is no belief that he/she will put the extra effort going forward. As a matter of fact, it may be impossible to turn someone like this around.

The OP made s lot of grammar and selling mistakes. He was not a high-po - more of a po-boy. The universities would love to take his money. He wouldn't be able to write white papers or manage.

Oil is a cyclical industry with booms and busts. It is not good for a stable long term career especially now with oil getting replaced for many uses and with the possibility of a peak oil demand looming. Best to plan your career around stable professions and industries. Many have suggested biotechnology, robotics and some related areas. They are fine. Law, medicine, finance, accounting will always be around. Depends on how long you can afford to be in school.

The oil exploration business is very unstable. You can be happily employed for 15-20 years and then, poof, you are out of a job. For some people it can be only 3 to 5 to 8 years before they are back to square one, looking for a job with all of the other thousands of laid-off people. Some are fortunate enough to make a 30-40 year career without ever having to wonder if they made the right decision. The bottom line is, no one can predict their own future with any certainty in this business. Your current unemployed status might just be a hidden blessing to apply your talents and skills in another professional field.

I am 7mpe and I didn't assume the OP was British. I totally agree with what you are saying, 7qlo. I know that I always pay more attention to people who speak and write correctly. One of my biggest pet peeves is the improper use of the subjunctive tense. I don't think most people know what that is any more. For those who don't, when I hear someone say "if I was you....", I cringe. Unfortunately I hear that a lot in the south. While I admire good use of grammar, I have two teenager daughters who I have observed closely over the years and it is my opinion that grammar is not being taught in school any more. More and more their schoolwork is done on computer and, as long as it passes spellcheck, it is somehow good. Microsoft only grammar checks the most basic things. Autospelling makes it unnecessary to even think anymore. With more communication moving toward handheld devices, I expect much of language to move toward abbreviations. I read in the news yesterday that even that will move toward emojis because using text only is somehow now considered rude. I love my language and lament its demise. I even lament that I can't use "its' " (the possessive form of "it" anymore...sigh) . I have, however, accepted the fact that my language, like myself, will go the way of the dinosaurs. The OP most likely did not misplace the "British" spelling of " Enrollment" nor misuse the verb "is" after supposedly attending a U.S. University, obtaining a Pet. Eng. degree, working for CVX for 5 years and working as a cashier at the local grocery because he or she is a member of the London Intellectual elite, in case any of you were wondering. That applies even if the employee is from across the pond.

On the other hand, although trivial to some, writing and speaking proper English is crucial for obtaining gainful employment in professional fields in most cases for U.S. companies, particularly when applying and interviewing. Some businesses, particularly smaller and lower tier, do not consider it as highly. Yet it is a relatively simple way to increase your odds. So it is a useful and healthy element of constructive criticism and should not be treated lightly or jokingly.

@7oxe - What about the word, “embbarrasment”? That word is definitely misspelled (and don’t go telling us it’s the British spelling of the word). Just lose one of the b’s and add an “s” to spell it correctly. It’s spelled, “embarrassment”.

Take a deep breath and try to grasp the concept that you're not the smartest person around and that there may be some things that you don't know. Before you quible over enrollment vs enrolment, be aware that enrollment is only the American spelling which, while certainly being the most important spelling, is not the only one.

Did you mean to ask "What ARE the enrollment statistics?" Seriously? Which college did you attend where you cheated to pass? That's why you make such a good stock-boy at the grocer and they let you be the cashier as a fill-in. That's a good job. Nothing wrong with that. Don't be ashamed.

Isn’t the purpose of higher learning to actually get to “know more”. What difference is it where you acquire your knowledge if you are getting it from an accredited college or university? Why does it have to be Stanford or another so-call Ivy League institution? I guess if you’re trying to impress a snob, go for it. For me, it’s a complete waste of time and money. Make your best impression by presenting yourself, not a piece of paper.

An MBA is where you get access, not necessarily where you learn anything useful. If you get an MBA think Ivy League, Stanford, etc. Otherwise it might not be worth it.

My two cents - look where the economy is going... The growth is in digital, the growth is in genetics, pharma and biotech. It's a non brainer buddy - learn to code and communicate as best as possible. Communication skills will help you fend off threats from imported #H1B workers, coding skills will give you an advantage over 95% of the population that cannot code. At that point, you are set for next two to three decades until the economy does another shift.

So, you can still stay in O&G but you can do consulting for O&G (all consulting companies are still in business and are desperate for folks who can 'talk' and 'get the tech') - I think your ki-ler combo would be a bachelors in a field that's applicable to O&G (or anything else), good communication skillset (MBA?) and some tech background (minor in CS or CS masters) - I'd go that way... This will unshackle you from the limits and uncertainty of O&G (Comm and Tech allow you to move industries) but can still help you get a job in the industry you like (e.g., O&G)...

The bill getting discussed addresses Federal income taxes. Who pays most of that? Well the bottom 50% of earners pay less than 3% of it. Many paying none at all and quite a few receiving money back and not paying in with earned income tax credits.

The top 10% of earners pay about 70% or so of the taxes. Is that fair? is that their fair share? They also pay MORE SALES TAX, MORE PROPERTY TAX, MORE PAYROLL TAX, MORE OF ALMOST EVERY TYPE OF CONSUMER TAX APPLICABLE, Yes, Virginia, they do. Why, you say? Because they earn more, buy bigger SUV's, houses, send their kids to the expensive schools, and more expensive everything else. I do not. I am not wealthy like that., However, it makes no difference if they have tax breaks, mucho capitals gains to lower their effective tax, etc, SO DO I, I PAY THE SAME CAPITAL GAINS TAX ON MINE, AND I AM NOT IN THE top 10%, FAIR IS FAIR for capital gains taxes.

4lus, The truth is that the republicans didn't go far enough to balance the budget and the democrats will not agree to lower entitlement spending or any other spending more, so that's the closest they could possibly get.

So let's raise taxes a bit, and cut out a little bit of spending, at a half-hearted attempt at fixing something then at least we have someone to blame it all on - the republicans as usual.

The democrats, supposedly the champions of taxation, raise taxes less than the republicans, in many cases. Reagan raised more taxes than he lowered. And he was relatively successful, by today's standards.

Then let the democrats take over the house and senate like they did in 2007. That didn't end well. Most folks like to ignore that sentiment and the affect it had on the economy. Some say it's unrelated. Or say that the democrat toxic-housing-loan debacle is Bush's & the republican's fault. That's like saying the ACA is unrelated to the cost of health insurance for employer-provided coverage.

No one wants to pay, but everyone wants to receive. And they all blame their not receiving on their opposing political party. Yet the other side says the same thing.

The GOP tax plan passed the House today. The Senate bill is still being hammered out. Talk about a screwing for the middle and lower classes. It all is designed to be temporary since it phases out in 2027, then taxes go up for all tax brackets. What may remain thereafter is the lowered corporate tax rate at 20% and the repeal (with no replacement) of the ACA. The rich win and everyone else loses. So much for the Republicans. I’ve already called Las Vegas to place my wager on the Democrats sweeping the 2018 mid term elections.

The republicans look to protect the rich and give them more wealth at the expense of everyone else. The democrats don’t give a rat’s azz about the rich or the poor. I guess you are right, because I depend on Government Subsidies for my health insurance through the ACA. That definitely makes me NOT financially independent. I do hope that one day I will be. I was raised to be independent and stand on my own 2 feet. I hope to be back on my feet again soon. Maybe the Republican tax bill will help. It is actually INCREASING the number of people who pay no taxes, the bottom 50% or so. I can't believe that they are taking that much more of the burden. I suppose that's why a lot of people don't like it. The democrats should like it though. Don't they like more taxes in the upper classes and being compassionate to the lower classes? Enjoy your retirement -3yjn. After 31 years, you deserve it. It’s refreshing to hear good stories on this board. Most retirees enjoying their rewards seldom come here. I was laid off 2 years ago, but luckily for me, I had 28 years with a great company and was fortunate to have built up a large nest egg and paid off my mortgage before getting cut. Retirement is enjoyable for me too. Cheers.
