Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I can only imagine the cut in hours in january

Seems like management is using up a lot of hours to where it’s probably in the negative for Jan feb

I can only imagine the severity of how hours will be cut. Ugh

How is everyone’s hours been so far?

@4hne In your store's case, maybe you'll just get cut back to a regular amount of non-overtime hours, then!

Believe it or not we were actually told to increase the staffing hours in our Sears store by our DM. We are so grossly understaffed we can't use all the hours allocated to our store. We are now almost all on overtime to make the store staffing hours acceptable. This after we were told to expect major cuts in January. Amazing huh?

@3cpc - At least your store adjusted their hours correctly! When our store went to reduced hours they closed earlier rather than open later. We were opening to allow two customers to shop and closing to turn dozens of customers away. For some reason they thought it was smart to jump over a dollar to pick up a dime when adjusting our hours. Unfortunately, our store is now closed.

@3clt Many malls are reluctant to allow stores to reduce hours from the standard mall hours that they want everything open, but can sometimes be convinced if threatened with losing an anchor sooner than they would otherwise. My Sears had been opening at 11am instead of 10am Mon-Thu for several months earlier this year, but went back to 10am a couple months ago.

With the hours cuts that have been going on, are the stores themselves also having their opening hours cut?

Softlines MCA, my weekly hours right now have been in the upper 20s and low 30s actually. Despite a small handful of newbies along with he rest of us. Still understaffed most shifts so it's hard as usual, esp this time of year, but have to appreciate it now, I guess, since I know we may be paying for it later...

Hours are already being cut! 14 hours next week in HI department. 4th quarter has been disaster, no sales whatsoever. How can a store survive on doing Less than 10k daily? Closing feels on the horizon as we too are one of the ring fence properties.

@QHEXX5G-1vny Last year Sears/Kmart announced two rounds of closures, with the first coming out the week between Christmas and New Years and the second coming out the following week

@1vdy He was talking about the list that came out a couple months ago. The liquidation process lasts for about 3 months, so the stores that started it then will be shutting down entirely in January. I've been guessing that the NEXT list of pending closures will be announced in late December or early January, after the Christmas season concludes.

January hours are always awful. I worked in a Sears store and another chain store about 20 years ago, and the cutback in hours was always out of control. Do you have vacation time you can use to offset the drop in pay? That is what I would do. I know even when I had hourly jobs I always worked as many hours as possible around the holidays and then banked that money for when the slow times hit.

@1qlu Your describing a CAC. I feel for them in my store its just disgusting how cut they are sometimes working 3 hours a week or 6. Its like management doesnt think that maybe this guys actually have bills to pay. I remember seeing a CAC that was so nice so cool and all of sudden he left middle of his shift. Everyone wondered what happened. Well he got another job offer and got fed up. Never expected the guy leaving in the middle of no where.

Its just going to be a scary year if they don't close they are going to milk it as much before it goes. I think they are finally going to go more into cutting ASM's. I got 3 ASM's and 1 Manager definitely seeing one cut hell wouldn't be surprised if 2 got cut on the spot. Maybe cut AP in my store smartest cut if you tell me guys always walking around not catching anyone. As its been mentioned eliminated majority or all FT positions and maybe demoting all this ASM's thats going to s--- for them big time same or more work load with less pay.

I don't know how it could be worse than last year. Last year they cut people to 3 hours per week and by Feb people were cut to 3 hours per every OTHER week. The only way it could be worse would be to cut your job.

There is going to be a lot of cuts in January. There are a lot of stores that are scheduled to close in January and they are in the process of liquidating at this time. Have you not seen the list?

If you do not reopen after December 25 you don't need to worry about the "January Problem". Just like Wars, no problems on returns, just don't ever open agin

Worried about getting hours cut? You should be more worried about them cutting your job!

Its all good. More loans and they kicked the can down the road on the existing loans too. That will give them time to completely turn the company around to profitability by leveraging the shop your way rewards program to provide further value to members.

I know January is going to be bad. I mean every year is bad, but this year seems to be to be one of the worse. I mean even this year with holiday hours they are so bad nothing compared to the previous years so I can just imagine hours so bad in January yet you can see the ASM and manager expecting everything done while they hide in their office.

Well the only good thing about hours being cut will be that management will have to pick up the slack! Maybe they can run everything from back room to registers see what a real days work is like

Hours cut back horribly. Holiday sales good but no hours to help members but management, ASM who punch, get all the hours they want...

We were told to expect bigger cuts than usual in January. We were told the Holiday Blowout and Holiday Blast promotions used up way more hours than anticipated and killed labor costs.
