Call center closure to leave AT&T's El Paso jobs below 500 heads

AT&T, which seven years ago was one of El Paso's largest private employers with about 2,400 employees, apparently will have less than 500 workers here when it shutters its last El Paso call center next month.

The company plans a November closure of its call center at 12 Founders Blvd. in East El Paso, which employs 278 non-management workers. Those employees will have to decide between moving to AT&T centers in Missouri, Florida, or San Antonio at their own expense, or be laid off. Some workers may qualify for early retirement.

It also has an unspecified number of employees in a back-office operation at the facility who are being forced moved to a new El Paso location.

Millenials time to take note: Service companies are pushing hard for Automation, and it is expected to eliminate 25 million jobs by 2027, impacting IT sector, services and manufacturing industries, according to a recent study by researchers at Northwestern University. “Our analysis suggests that without changes to the current U.S. Labor laws, and tax system, a sizable fall in the costs of automation would lead to a massive rise in income inequality,” Forrester Research found.

Who will be impacted the most by automation?

The highest concentration of industrial robots occurs in the Midwest and Upper South of the U.S., according to data released in August by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, D.C. More than half of the nation’s 233,305 industrial population in 10 Midwestern and Southern states, led by Michigan (28,000 robots or 12% of total number), Ohio (20,400 or 8.7%), and Indiana (19,400 or 8.3%). The entire West accounts for just 13% of the nation’s industrial robots.
