Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Facing LR

My team know that we will be targeted soon and I keep hearing 2 things around me :

"Update my resume now ?" "No it is way too early until I know the next LR financial details"

"Sending application to have a backup job and be confident about the future ?" "Oh no I don't want to take a chance to leave before the LR payout"

So they keep complaining for months !

What do you think about this states of mind ?

You have an "employment at will" agreement with Cisco, assuming you are in the US. It is NOT illegal for you to update your resume and social network profile, start reaching out to friends and family regarding opportunities. It WOULD be ideal for you that if you are LR'd and get the payout, that you are THEN prepared to move straight into another company if that is your desire in an LR scenario. If your procrastinating and not putting energy into this plan, then you should take evaluate your priorities. IMHO

Update your resume, update your linkedin page. Subscribe to linkedin premium (you'll bubble up higher in searches by recruiter). Don't wait until you've been LR'd to start this work, use your time at your desk to do it now. I've seen whole departments pretty much shut down the weeks before being LRd (the decision to LR is done well before this). You'll get a package but you're better off being prepared now.

You will get severance but job search now. I got hit last time in 2016 and took me 8 months to find the next gig. I'm so much happier now, the cisco environment was so toxic. Of course it's different for everyone. It's better to hunt while you're employed. It just looks better to the employers and you don't have to keep saying..."I got laid off"...instead say "looking for growth..." you know the drill. Update that resume, upload to indeed.com and linkedin and get going. Don't wait!

Your colleague's state of mind can't be judged on your paraphrasing.

Complaints? seperate issue. If/when 'the troops' stop complaining is when they've given up caring, so count it a good healthy venting.

You should always keep your resume updated and periodically check the job market.

Relax dude!

If you work on a profitable product (if there is still in chichco) then there is no need to worry, and you can tell your team that they are doing a great job. And move your a-- to get them great bonuses.

If it is not the case, then stop lying to yourself and get your resume updated ...

In the meanwhile, chill and enjoy your life...
