Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Will it get even harder to advance?

A lot of people are talking about possible layoffs with the incoming merger with Time Warner, but I was wondering how will this affect the chance to advance within the company? Layoffs are nothing new for AT&T, we all know this, so it's a high probability they will happen, it's just the scale that is the unknown. But advancement opportunities have always been rare, if non-existent at times, and this might make an already bad situation even worse. Does anybody have any experience with similar situations, what usually happens with such mergers? Who gets priority?

I don't know about LA but there are no opportunities in Dallas.

Mergers have a tendency to create jobs for people with the desired skill sets. That's if the company is looking at employees as assets and not costs. For current AT&T employees that are not in the field, if you are not in LA or Dallas you are going to find your opportunity to advance limited going forward under the new operating model.

This company has changed dramatically. There is no concern for the employee. I do understand that really is not their job, but people get jerked around. I have seen people take a new job, and then that job declared surplus within a week! I have seen people move out of state for an open position. sell their house and uproot their family only to be declared surplus within a couple months. I have seen people outside of the company quit a good job to go to work for AT&T as a temp, being told that they will likely become permanent, only to be let go after 6 months. The field techs have no life. They have cut too many of them. They never know when they are going home at night. They are forced on a daily basis to pick up more jobs. They are forced to work on their scheduled days off. There is simply no regard for the employee. Under Randall, the legacy part of this company has gone to hell. The customers are treated no better. No regard for our business or residential POTS and DSL customers. I have seen businesses left unable to function with 8 or 9 lines down for a week or more. Dispatches 7-10 days out or more are common. AT&T wants to be an entertainment company. Good luck with that Randy.

T is a transitional company now, something you can put in your resume to get to a real career oriented company , from telco,to failed Satellite provider, media content to be , to what ever else they want to buy, without real plan there are not careers.

I do not know anyone that aspire to have a career here anymore

It used to be relatively easy for a good performing union represented employee to get a promotion into management. Now those opportunities are somewhat rare, I think due to the fact that so many managers are going to be looking jobs themselves. A while back, I was offered a management position but it was retracted because of a management surplus.
