Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Hours are getting cut again in Sears FLS

Don't know if this is my store only but starting next week, hours are getting cut again. After the Christmas season we had the usual cutbacks and then the severe cutbacks following that. Gradually we gained more hours back, not to former levels but better.

During the Monday meeting today we were told to slash the schedule to the bone. Part timers will be getting between 4 and 8 hours a week. 1 or 2 shifts. From reading on here, it seems some other stores operate like this already. 1 employee on for the entire store. We had been relatively lucky but no longer. We have some shady leads who will manage to get some overtime out of this though guaranteed. They of course are the same ones that do no work but will claim they have to be there due to short staffing.

@1fsy I am shocked you actually get 40 hours. The leads in my store have been going to the low end 30's. Also you are a nice lead I remember one of the leads of softlines was so bitter. She would take majority of the hours and wouldn't care of her team. What makes it funnier is she was somewhat unproductive. My lead was pretty nice she would actually cut her hours to get the 30 and give us the rest s---s that they eliminated her position.

But its the solution right cut more and expect sales to happen less work force out their which customers just get fed up.

If I were still working for Sears I would quit right before Thanksgiving. They aren't giving you any hours all year. Then Sears will use and abuse your time for the holidays by expecting you to give up Thanksgiving night, Christmas Eve, New Years Day and all the weekends in December. Then they will drop you like a hot potato after the holidays. I think all employees should just say no to working on Thanksgiving and leave them at the time it hurts the most. After all Sears hasn't given a damn about you and your bills all year long don't feel the least bit bad about not showing up for Thanksgiving or Black Friday. Let the district managers and execs get up from their tables and ring up the customers.

We've been paying the new hires for the mandatory 3 hour minimum to come in to have their ids photocopied. 3 hours that someone could use next week to actually work.

We're cutting hours again starting next week.

It's the middle of August and if Sears is going to survive another holiday season, this is very short sighted. Other stores will be hiring their seasonal help soon making it the perfect time of year to change employers. Even if it's just seasonal, you stand a chance of being able to stay on at a healthy company. You are much more likely to leave Sears when you only work 6 hours a week. Why not leave?

We have kids who will be returning to school so unavailable to work or work as much. How 'bout close out those positions due to attrition and STOP hiring!!!! That would save money and keep hours available.

Viscious circle we are caught in. We cut hours so we can't stock the shelves or help the customers which leads to customers going elsewhere which leads to declining sales which leads to more cuts to the labor hours which leads to more stock not on the shelves and less customer service which leads to customers going elsewhere.... you get the idea.

Even with back to school hrs not making sales.let's just cut our loses and close down .so much tension in store.manager's that are sitting in office lounging not doing anything while the leads we have left are doing all work.what is rong with these district managers that just let this happen.

1fsy: you are the first ft lead that I ever heard of willing to cut their own hours! Kudos to you and sorry you can't get any time off

I think the stores could run better without a store manager since the ASMs and leads who do all the work anyway

It's ironic how the store manager takes their vacations no matter what but won't approve lead vacation time

I'm a lead...my part timers can have the hours. I won't be taking overtime. I can't get time off to save my life, so a cut in hours would actually be a blessing to me. I do feel for the ones who do want the hours. 10 hours here and 4 hours there is ridiculous, and the funny thing is we are still hiring!!!

Maybe I'll shave off 3-5 hours off of my FT40, maybe 10 if possible. It's not a whole lot but I'm sure there's someone else that could use the hours and I could use some R&R and any little morsel of time I can get away from the toxicity of this place, and perhaps have time to look for a better job. At this point, if I could, I'd dock myself down to 29 hours every other week.

Unfortunately, my inconsiderate store manager who is always finding ways to take time off left and right, armed with excuses for not coming in to work will probably shoot any idea of "donating" my hours, even though there is ample MOD coverage at all hours of the day through other leads and ASMs. Our store manager does not really participate in MOD coverage because she is too busy playing on Pebble and Facebook or browsing Amazon/eBay/etc. in her office, or sneaks out to get "coffee" and is still nowhere to be seen an hour later, car gone and all. I get the impression that the district manager will do nothing since they apparently know each other outside of Sears.

Anyway...

So, not only will my crew will lose more hours and more of the workload will roll towards my way. I might as well live at the store. Why not? There's mattresses, a fridge, stove and micro in the breakroom and a place to hose off in the back. Maybe if I get insomnia I could RAD/RAN or something. Haven't had a day off in six days. I have two more days to go.

Oh brother more hours to cut with no coverage. Than managers say we arent doing sales, but the solution is to cut to the bone which course that will make sales even worse than they are. I am expecting I guess a cut of hours again...

Hours are tied to sales and our SM is gleeful when keeping the store under budget even with declining sales. Declining sales are the new normal so I guess as people have joked on here, soon there will be a cash jar at the door. No employees. Customers can just walk up on the truck and get what they want.
