Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. layoffs

Department managers laid off - this is massive (August 2017)

Bed Bath & Beyond Department managers are being laid off today (Thursday 8/3/17)... Severance package offered, paperwork needs to be signed. We kind of knew this was coming (and some posts were indicating it here on layoffs.com) but people were not aware it'll be this massive.

This is just a beginning - there will be more cuts coming - things are bad.

BBB has been doing this quietly for at least the last five years. It began with finding bogus reasons for letting go tenured managers to reduce payroll. The scale of this latest round of layoffs is mind boggling. BBB is doing the same thing Circuit City did many years ago. They eliminated their commission program, which lead to them losing their most experienced employees, and look what happened to them. BBB is next, I feel sorry for those who have lost their job, and for those who will lose their job in he future. I know how it feels, I've done this dance with BBB many years ago. It turned out to be the best day of my life..

Everyone said it pretty good. But age discrimination played a part. And length of service. They don't want to pay $50,000 plus anymore so they fire and hire the young incompetents.

It's always sad when good people you know have lost their jobs. Not sure it's fair to simply blame it on the company though. How many of the people criticizing BBB have made purchases on Amazon and other online sources recently. At the end of the day THAT's what put your friends out of work. Hard to fault a company for trying to stay profitable and protect the bulk of their employees. At least they are still in a position to pay a decent severance to help the employees that were separated. That's a lot more then you can say for so many retailers that waited until it was too late and ended up having to put all of their employees out of work without any any severance at all. The more we shop online the more retailers we will put in the same position. Sad but reality.

It has been coming down for three years the reduction in managers. I think it just was not coming down fast enough with just people quitting or changing jobs. My store in eleven years has went from 5 senior managers and 6 assistants to 3 senior and 2 hourly managers. I lost a lot of friends that have been with company a lot of years wish them the best with the good severance package. Get on the link a lot of people hate retail so always jobs its a tough gig.

Those who did not loose there jobs today have no business or rights to post their lame comments on this posting board, you still have a job it's not here to make you feel better about yourself or the poor way this went down.

I'm trying to stay positive...I was looking for a way out, they made the decision for me! I got 3 months severence...and I can still collect unemployment after that! Sometimes a fresh start is what is needed to get you motivated. I'm still alive, healthy, and my wife is by my side no matter what. Life will move on, it always does!

It is never easy for a company to decide to eliminate jobs. Bbb did what it had to do to remain profitable. This was the best decision to move the company forward. It was hard for the 900 positions that were lost today but many still have jobs. We need to be thankful that more lives weren't impacted.

900 plus managers will be let go nationwide. Let that sink in.

Not just department managers, I was a senior manager, perviously an operations manager for the company. Was told I just wasn't needed anymore because of their over staffing.

Our store was already severely understaffed and we lost 2 full time people today. Both were great managers who were instrumental to the entire store. What incentive is there now for anyone to want to work here when there's so little room for advancement? I feel so bad for our Store Manager, as his workload just increased exponentially.

So sad considering the long hours that ran into long weeks, months and years that my husband worked for these ungrateful, greedy owners. Fifteen years of crappy days off, over nights, no help from district management, no raises, crazy demanding customers. Maybe this is a blessing. Most work in retail is thankless. I wonder how they will manage it without these managers? I will never spend a penny in a BBB again.

Very sad day at work today. Couldn't believe when my store manager told me department managers all got layed off. I have been with the company for 16 years now and about 3 years ago stepped down if I didn't I would have been in the same boat. Very sad to see people I have worked with for so many years just have no job just like that. Thinking of all you guys and will truly miss you guys. You all worke so hard and was the heart of the company. Very disgusted in how they went about all this. Not even to give them the option to step down.

Damn glad I left this company when I did over ten years ago but I still have plenty of friends there . I knew something would happen after they kept opening stores ten miles apart from each other . something was going to give at some point .

Been with them for over 15 years...have sweat blood and tears for them from day 1..one of the hardest companies to work for..def the most demanding, and by far the most insulting after today..not sure if they realize what we do for them, the hours we put up with, the time away from our families..the grind day in and day out, coming to work hurt, sick, tired, drained..we were the HEART AND SOUL of a company that we made a fortune 500 company... very un professional in how this was done, but then again not to many care for there employees anymore as its always whats put into there pockets..not sure what people do with million dollar salaries..ohh yes i do, putting the middle class out of work..good luck out there

You guys are idiots if you think that anyone is trying to ruin your lives. This is my 3rd time being laid off and by far BBBY has offered the most and been the fairest of the bunch. It's business, not personal. Our job no longer is needed. Period. Sorry for feel like you were personaly attacked but that's not how it is.

Macy's did the same thing to their store executives....have any of your log tenured employees looked into if BBB has an official retirement program for say 25 years of service and being age 55? Good luck to all...

So lucky to be a lead, not manager...but I am still in disbelief over how many of my 10-year-long family are gone! I was so close to it being me. I'm waiting for store closings now...and afraid for myself being a full-time lead! They are going about this all wrong and soon I fear we'll all be out jobs, going the way of Linens and Things. This is what happens when they would rather buy other companies than have leadership in their stores.

Sad day today. I did not have as many years as some. But I am sorry for every one that was laid off.

Yes there was a pay deposit yesterday and mysteriously my store manager took off. I was off today and they wanted me to come in and "talk" . Well I did not go on in I told him to just tell me what he had to tell me. I was shocked not even the option of being department supervisor but I could apply in 6 months for the position.

A year ago we were told they were restructuring and that only the "new hires" would be affected. I personally was told by HR that this in no way would affect my job or future. Had I had to option to step up I certainly would have.. Calculated and destroying lives. It's apparent the "restructure" was not communicated correctly across the board or you wouldn't see so much shock and dismay. I can recover and move on, what about the sad sack of severance for the people who have spent all of their lives dedicated to a company who in turn cut them loose without a second thought. I hope destroying lives is worth all of the 7 milllion you're trying to save.

To the person who said "shame on you" to everyone who stayed- no. Shame on YOU for having no compassion for your fellow associates across the company who stayed because they had put in so much time, dedication, and have families to support. Shame on YOU. Watch your current job lay you off- enjoy karma.

What an utter debacle. From allowing monies to be deposited, the complete shutdown of any communication. Cutting the fat by sticking it to the people who make you money. Shame on you BBB. Employees beware. It'll happen again.

This is sad news, but not unexpected. All dept mgrs were spoken to about a year ago and told they had to step up to a higher level position or accept a lower paying hourly position. They were point blank told that the position was being eliminated. At least that's what was supposed to happen. Maybe in certain markets the communication was lacking, but in my store it was made quite clear. When I was hired 20+ years ago the dept manager was the most important position in the store and was the entry point for all levels of managers looking to move up (or not) in the company. It's a sad day but I hope it inspires many of my friends and former co-workers who are still there or who were let go today to find a job where they are respected and doing something they really enjoy.

My 50 year old husband let go today from BBB. 7 weeks severance but really concerned about the loss of health insurance. Was given a grace period but we have 2 kids and did not expect this at all.

So sorry to everyone affected by this. An ugly day for sure. Hope everyone takes a deep breath and is able to go at it tomorrow. There are good companies out there growing a hiring. Have to take this as a a neccessary evil and move thru it. Have been thru it myself and found a better position.

This is. Extremely sad. These Dept Mgrs held the stores afloat busting their butts for this company. Most of them have been with BBB for more than 10 years. They have been replaced with YOUNGER people with the title of Dept Supervisors guaranteeing them 40 hours and paying them less. Great way to support your people.

Thank you for destroying so many lives over greed. The rich get richer. Line the pockets of your share holders while leaving so many lives in shambles.

I wonder if it's occurred to anyone that regional support staff and regional directors are redundant and one of those layers should have gone first? Most just sit in offices all day doing nothing to help stores.
