Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. layoffs

Department managers laid off - this is massive (August 2017)

Bed Bath & Beyond Department managers are being laid off today (Thursday 8/3/17)... Severance package offered, paperwork needs to be signed. We kind of knew this was coming (and some posts were indicating it here on layoffs.com) but people were not aware it'll be this massive.

This is just a beginning - there will be more cuts coming - things are bad.

There already is a class action lawsuit filed against BBB in New Jersey. I was contacted and met with the law firm.

I wish all these asshats would stop saying what was "done" in the company!!! Just beacause YOU were asked or told to move up or down doesn't mean everyone was given the same dialogue!! Why can't people be upset because a company they dedicated their lives to took the rug out from right underneath us! I very specifically remember the conversation I had with HR, Jennifer Hume, and she specifically stated this would in no way impact my position. Don't speak for the lot of us, speak ONLY for your damn self!!

More BS! We were told that a company called Right Mgmt would call us this Monday. I just got my call. I asked them about the Monday call and lady says we just got the information yesterday. So now we wait other week before they start. Also, it is all online and not in person. You better move on by yourself! Don't think this is for our best interest! More disappointment.

Deerfield Front End Manager got promoted to salaried Housewares Key Holder after several years being Department Manager. Cst department manager at downtown store get promoted to salaried keyholder, then 11 year Bridal Department Manager get promoted to district out of nowhere. These were my clues to what was happening. So when the hammer fell I was not surprised. However I think the pieces of sh-- that delivered the message to the ones that got laid off, should be ashamed of themselves and think about their daughter/son's/wives/husbands, If this was happening to any of them how would they feel???

I'll be living in a van or a car after my severance is done and then I hope to get channel 9 news involved so they could see what happens to somebody when they get laid off without notice from a good job with good benefits. I see a "Go fund me in my future".

Also, if you go through The Network for a reference they can state your salary. That is no one's business. You should get your references from trusted managers you have worked with. Do not use district or regional staff as they can not be trusted.

So you say it's a debt free company, that's a lie. You got rid of all the people making 52000 and up. That's horrific. Bbb I will pray for your demise and hope the people that delivered the news are impacted 3 times as hard as we were.

To my understanding the severance paperwork needed to be submitted by 08/10/17 in order to not see an interruption in pay. If you haven't received it you should reach out to someone to see where it is.

Of course we are all pissed off about what happened, but let's recognize it for what it is, that the company saw a way to save money. This had nothing to do with executive salaries and field office staffing levels.

Each of us need to get over this and move on asap. Nothing we do or say is going to change what happened. I can't fathom that some people are saying their careers or even their lives are ruined as that's not true.

There continue to be some good opportunities out there in retail management, although far less than just a few years ago, each of us will need to dig for them. I already have an interview scheduled for Tuesday. Heck, maybe my severance check will be a windfall as I was thinking of leaving anyway.

Also, there's no chance of an age discrimination lawsuit. While some of us are over 40, there are plenty who are not. I know 7 people that were laid off. Only 3 of the 7 (myself being one of them) are over 40. BBB is a very smart company that's not going to leave themselves open to this sort of lawsuit.

Bed, Bath and beyond needs to draw a line on their return policy. Customers are returning items, coffeemakers, pillows, pots and pans, Roomba's. It's awesome to be nice to customers, but on the receipt it should say 30 days return from date of receipt. You should not accept a return that their merchandise is 5 years old. Bed Bath and. Beyond would not be having lay offs, if they would consider to let the customer know you cannot be returning items, that you've used for years, and expect a new item. This is not Rental at bed bath and beyond. Take care of your employees, that need to feed their families.

If Bed Bath and Beyond continues to let customers abuse the return policy and turn their store into a rental center the stores will close. The customers are rude and condescending and allowed to return 10 year old coffeemakers they found in a dumpster and walk out with a new coffeemaker without spending a dime. That's whats going to close the stores. All you have to do is raise your voice and call an associate stupid and walk out with a new item for no money! That's what's going to close the stores.

It still disgusts me to know how much the uppers in this company make, but yet they dont restructure there pockets for the lives they just ruined...i will say and will say lots, Dont Trust anyone....start makeing alternative plans..they did it once..it will happen again, just a matter of when..and talking about legal issues, well we do so much as a company just not to get caught its disgusting!!! Talk about fraud hey by the way your AS-IS is just damaged merch getting resold for profit...and then we donate it!!!..the most UN FRIENDLY and Politically in correct HR dept..yeah whose back pockets are you in!!! Because not sure how most get away with how they talk and embarass us as loyal employees...there is no doubt as many have said, we bent over backwards for u, worked sick, late hours, never saw our families..did what u needed. Right or wrong we did whay was asked..karma is a b--ch..and for all the presumed MIT's that were spared.. word thru the grape vine if u dont cut it with in a certain period of time..well your next!!!

There are still folks working the 47.5hr week in our market on the new posted schedule. Titles changed, but schedules and (I assume) rates did not.

They kept who they wanted, make no mistake about that.

We understand the needs of the business. We live it.

It's ridiculous that people got calls of termination and not the courtesy of notice and a face to face. Shameful lack of respect from a company that steeps it's people in service.

Important information,

if anyone was enrolled in the FSA with benefits, submit your receipts ASAP ( like this weekend). If you submit receipts that are dated before your termination date, they will pay out up to your maximum for the total year. Extra cash in your pocket! Don't believe me, read all the fine print. I'm getting every last dime out of this company!

I worked for them over 9 years and busted my butt. It angers me that this was their solution. In my district, some of the ones left are the useless ones. It's funny how they kept the ones that are always late and don't do work. Or the managers that sit in the office watching movies on their phones and ipads! They offered pay cuts and lower positions to district staff but got rid of the ones who actually busted their butt at store level. The good ones let go will fall on their feet and rise above. The stores will crash and burn!

I spoke to an employment attorney yesterday regarding signing the agreement not to sue in exchange for getting the severance package. She said she has represented former BBB employees before, their employment attorneys are very savvy, and it's very unlikely there would be any serious grounds for a class action lawsuit related to this layoff. There's nothing illegal or fraudulent about them having planned this ahead of time. Obviously they did, this decision was made long before this week.

On the other hand, certain individuals might have grounds for a legal action, and most employee attorneys will give you an initial consultation at no charge. If you suspect you do, you should check with an attorney before you sign, but few of us will. Generally there's nothing illegal or fraudulent about a company laying off employees.

One more thing, the claims that the company is in financial trouble are bogus. The company is publicly held, and all the data is readily available. Sure, business is challenging, but BBB remains very profitable. Their business is changing, and that's what's driving the changes, one of which we just experienced. I'm trying not to take this personally, and I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. We all need to. Went on my first job interview this morning in a long long time.

Does it say you HAVE to sign it? If you don't sign it, does that mean you won't get the package? Did you see that case was last updated on August 2nd? Layoffs were August 3rd.

They picked and chose who they wanted to keep. The Dms had to submit names of the managers they wanted to keep. Those managers who were not promoted to key holder got to keep their hourly wage and works 40 hours only. Not 47.5
