Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How I can delay the termination date??

Being on urgent leave, sick or regular PTO, can those delay the termination date?

Different forms of leave of absence are your best bet. PTO will give you nothing, as PTOs are cancelled.

As others wrote, it varies heavily by country. In general health/maternity/paternity based leaves of absence gives you the most chance (and also potentially most leverage from the PR standpoint if you would like to engage in fighting layoff). Some countries do have special protections for these.

Almost any country have some protection for people going/being called to army, but that's a bit extreme imho.

If you are really up to doint this, you should probably first consult a lawyer specializing in employment laws of the country.

And the ultimate question is "is it really worth it"? Even you feel that's unfair, the decision about you has been made. Unless you have really good reason to do this (say, continuation of medical treatment to which you would loose access after being laid of, or some immigration related aspects), and you have realistic hope of lining up another job at cisco, it's rather unreasonable to try to protract this.

@pha: I've seen women get laid off while on maternity leave. While you can't be terminated, I was told you can be laid off if the company eliminates your entire group due to restructuring. If true, I assume the same would apply to illness, etc.

Depends on variety of things. Country of employment, reason of illness, contract of employment , length of service.

If you have a cold , no. On the other hand if you have a life threatening illness you can not be laid off. Mental illness (including depression) pregnancy, post operative care are all legitimate reasons for protection against termination.

However in Cisco once you are identified as a candidate for LR you are moved to a special budget and you are no longer paid by your department. The issue is you will never come out the LR fund.

One way is to apply for a few internal jobs. It doesn't matter if you have any chance of getting them or not as they still have to go through the motions of interviews etc and that takes time.

You can only appeal after you have been terminated, and you have to do that within 5 days from / including termination date. Build a very good case ask for the Matrix that got you selected don’t settle for the first offer they will offer more. Just keep pushing.
