August - RIFed 5 people

November - we have 5 new H1Bs.

With something like this happening, this country will never ever be great again

@KK3TfTU-1yyz: Same here. Found another position inside Cisco within 3 weeks of my lay off notice. However I already had something in-process outside of Cisco so on the termination date, decided to take the severance and go.

These severance packages are not required by law (in the USA, outside of Michigan) and I see them getting less and less generous in the future. No need to take a chance given their is $ available in the marketplace.

ZSW, I have no reason to make things up, so let me clarify. I found an internal job at Cisco in 2 days after notification, but decided to take the package and move along. No BS there, my phone and email were blowing up with opportunities. 16 years at Cisco, CSE in Collab for 12 years, also TME and Program manager roles in the last 4 years. I have established a lot of great relationships over those years and had many people reaching out to bring me in (internally and externally).

The job I got was created for me, because of the background and relationships I had with the company (Cisco partner) over those years and they needed someone with my background and contacts at Cisco. I waited a few weeks for them to work out the job req, and joined them. Never put my resume on the street.

Sorry it took you 3 months and had to relocate. I realize my situation might be unusual, by I do think busting my a-- for all those years and making sure I didn't ever burn anybody paid off.

Hope your new situation is working well for you.

@zsw

I got RIF'd last Feb, had a new job inside lined up in 2 days, decided to leave. No way I am going through that crap every 6 months. MUCH happier now.

Don't BS us. If you got RIF'd, how did you decide to leave? Sounds like the decision was made for you. Are you glad you're gone, sure. Most people once laid off find new jobs, they're glad they're gone too and don't look back.

Count yourself lucky that you found a job in 2 days. I call that BS too, but if it's true then good for you. It took me 3 months and I had to relocate or go unemployed longer. I know others who were let go at the same time who are STILL unemployed and are talented people.

And, yes, I agree with the OP that bringing in H1B's to fill the same jobs you just "restructured" out is a clear violation of what the H1B program is supposed to be about, bringing in foreign talent that you can't find here in the US. But it's BS that you can't find it here because you just let go the talent you claim you can't find. The H1B program is not meant for "cheap labor", but it's what the reality is and if it's not fixed, there's going to be a lot of older people getting poorer and poorer as they get older because they can't find/keep work due to their age and the younger generation is going to have to pay higher taxes to take care of them as they end up on unemployment and welfare.

to @KK3TfTU-zsw: You hit the nail on the head. However, I do think there's a problem with the H1B program itself and immigration authorities when there's gross failure of the checks and balances that should be in place to avoid misuse. The abuse has been going on for decades now. No wonder Ginni Rometty didn't waste a day to send an open letter to Trump! You know what they say: Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer. It's painfully clear that the cornerstone 'resource' strategy at IBM and at many other tech companies is to ship jobs to other countries through outsourcing and to hire cheap labor through exploits in the H and L visa programs. Let's see if Trump puts his money where his big mouth is.

I don't think the H1B program itself is the problem. It is the misuse of it, which is the problem. Probably a bit of legislation that had its heart in the right place but instead, it has been used to line the pockets and pad the books of a handful of abusers.

I can see why DUKE would bring over a cutting-edge Cardiologist from Iran, India that , does not exist here. Or why DUPONT might bring over a leading material scientist/PhD from Norway, Singapore, etc. But bringing over a new college-grad JAVA Developer from Bangalore? Really?? We don't have any of those here?

Or is it just that having an Indian H1B (NOTE: this is not an attack on Indians) JAVA Developer working for 2/3 the salary of a US JAVA Developer and with a 'work or go home' arrangement in-place make it something that looks a lot like 3rd World indentured servitude?

H1B Program = 21st Century Slave Labor
