Never mind the losses that CVX has been taking (any positive earnings is due to asset liquidations and what not, so let's not debate that), never mind the fact that forced ranking (unfair at best) is shoved down the throats of the slaves, and the 10% cut taking place in the next few months, never mind all that, Chevron (DWEP) leadership decided to throw their yearly dinner party with live entertainment. The party took place over the weekend and while it is now in the past, one can't help but wonder, the tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars paid for such party, wasn't that money better saved or spent more wisely? I banged my head against the wall couple of times trying to figure out what was DWEP celebrating? Excellent performance? Earnings???? ----- You have the CEO SWAT sending his monthly ridiculous emails praising random chevroids about saving $10 here and $5 there, however, lavish parties (amongst others idiotic things) are excluded?! WTF!! --- Why the hypocrisy? Why the waste? Why the insensitivity? --- Chevron leadership, I struggle daily and fail to find one leadership trait in you, you lack professionalism, wisdom, reasoning, logic, common sense, sensitivity, business sense, management skills, you focus on stupid trivial things and enforce them, so much so that your subordinates hate working for you and/or at best fail to focus on their primary functions! --- FCVX

My workgroup has scheduled an upcoming holiday party, but I won't be attending. I told my supervisor I have a prior commitment for that date. I didn't tell him what I had planned, but I'm going out to lunch with a former colleague. One very devoted ex-coworker that got laid off and who is still looking for work.
Well said Marvin! Wishing you good golf, good tennis, or whatever makes you happy.
Let's put the cuts behind us. I fully support a return to normal practices immediately including social activities. If you do not and prefer an ongoing regime of cost cutting and fear, then perhaps you should not attend the party.
Doesn't sound like you snowflakes were ever in the service. If so, you would know that getting to know your mates is one way trust is built. Whaaa, not my president! Not fair.
Spot on @1nzz.
Parties build teams??? I hope you are not a supervisor or manager. Leadership, respect and trust is what builds teams. Not LGBT awareness, not diversity, not multiculturalism, not petty office politics and favoritism, not immature company slogans (OE, Human Energy) and definitely not parties.
"Management is celebrating?" That's ridiculous - everyone is human. As rediculous as referring to the "evil Wall Street". Yes, empathize with those laid off. But recognize that there are survivors whose task is to move the company forward. The company has been resized and reorganized to succeed in a tougher business environment. That's tough, but that's life and that's business. Those employees still demoralized are bringing the entire work force down. Parties build teams and help restore sense of normality.
My own thoughts about these parties is that it is actually demoralizing for employees because it represents a complete lack of empathy for all of the coworkers that are no longer there. It is depressing enough already to go to work with all of the empty offices and thoughts about how the laid off people are getting by and wondering if v you will be next in the upcoming year. The only ones who are celebrating are management who are looking forward to their obscene bonuses. Most regular employees must be embarrassed by these parties. It must take some guts to attend one.
@1yde, whatever the cost per employee is for these holiday parties, the point is having these end of year celebrations are inappropriate this year. It's the ill timing of the parties with the recent layoffs of many loyal employees whose families are now struggling with cutting expenses and the uncertainty of when they'll find their next job. It's all in the message this sends out.
So what do you figure the total cost per head of DWEP's party?
@1ncr, the workgroups getting holiday parties this year is an inappropriate move by management. Especially so soon after having laid off many folks this year.
I would disagree that the parties boost morale. The fact that employees wonder why we are having them amid layoffs, cost cutting, and other efficiency improvements is mind blowing. I know that many people have asked for the parties to be cut. I can say that if the parties remain, at least we know we are getting some sort of a bonus. Right?
NMA makes DWEP look like stalwarts of capital stewardship.
These types of events, if not done too often, are an excellent way to boost staff morale. In the overall scheme of things, not that expensive or over the top either. Business leaders so often underestimate the power of these events to build esprit de corps and camaraderie, important in fiscally constrained environment. So Big Bang for the buck.
When people lose their jobs to reduce costs I imagine it would be rather offensive to have excessive parties. Play it down, some lunches perhaps, but big parties at hotels with bands......be sensitive.... to the effing shareholders at least ! Show restraint.
OP, is this their last hurrah? Are they going away?
DWEP has always acted like they were "special" despite their poor performance. The job cuts obviously need to start at the top of this pitiful organization. Think Bigfoot and then try to reconcile the lavish party. Poor leadership sending conflicting messages again.
OP, that's why I don't loose sleep at night looking for ways to be more efficient, save the company money, innovate, or put in too much overtime. Those efforts are not properly rewarded nor improves the bottom line. I just show up to work on time and leave on time, I do my job well and make my scheduled deadlines. I stay away from confrontations and I don't offer any solutions. I just go along and let others spin their wheels in the mud. I work to keep my boss off my back and I get my annual salary action in return. I hope to put in another 6 years in this company, then I'll retire and delete my iPhone contacts list.
Sad but not surprising, actually typical of CVX
