Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

WD - Famous for the Christmas RIF

I worked there for over 15 years and was the beneficiary of a Christmas RIF. WD will frequently do some sort of layoff in December right before Christmas. I think because of tax reasons but not sure. No one likes to hear layoff, but it would be nice to not hear it right at Christmas.

Advice to managers: if you want to stay longer, please layoff all great and young engineers. You will be safe without them.

Google age discrimination in hiring is old news. I wish people would do that for Apple and a few other hardware companies.

Google under investigation for age discrimination, too. If youg people are hired first b/c they just learned latest tech, who do you think taught it to them? Ha!

On the age discrimination issue, some HP folks got laid off, filed suit for age discrimination. Suit is still ongoing. But they have pretty specific evidence. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/add-hewlett-packard-to-the-list-of-tech-icons-sued-for-ageism_us_57bdbb82e4b00c67eca0f7cb

If you are legacy HDD engineer, in addition to forming legal theories with your closest anonymous internet friends, perhaps you should also circulate your resume to horse buggy, typewriter and steam engine companies

@K69W8gT-6cgb: I am not a lawyer, nor should you seek legal advice on a board such as this; however, I gather from your question that you were laid-off recently? If that is the case, whatever separation agreement you signed upon your release somewhat precludes your suing WD (you may have to accept arbitration first). You might want to file a complaint with the EEOC, but you're going to have to prove that age discrimination is wide-spread throughout to organization.

WD always layoff older people. Like my Dept.. each time lay off they let older people go and hire new young engineer from China. Can I sue WD company?

You know, I often wondered why a lot of companies (believe me, I'm not letting WD off the hook here) lay people off around the Christmas holidays. Are we nothing but numbers on a balance sheet to them? Seriously, if you must have a RIF, then at least wait until after the major holiday...sheesh!
