Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Resource Action 2017

I will be the first one to start it – let’s talk about IBM Resource Action for 2017. I know that there are some rumors already floating around, but let’s consolidate things in this thread. In short I’d like to address the following:

  • Timing of Resource Actions – are we going to see quarterly boosts throughout 2017?

  • Size of layoffs – are we going to exceed, in size, 2016 layoffs – should we brace for a mega cut?

  • Geographies – where will 2017 layoffs going to be concentrated? East? West? US vs other geographies?

  • Verticals – What groups will be hit the most as it relates to the upcoming resource actions?

That’s all that comes to mind right now – I am sure I am omitting some other important stuff but that’s what I have right now…

Thoughts?

Can tell for fact, IBM came into Fannie Mae and have done nothing but cut staff and NO WORK has been accomplished. No Work! It's amazing... and Fannie is paying them blindly. The upgrades supposed to be completed in 2013 have made no progress. Zero. Probably because the fired the complete staff and just keep the money.

Reality is that a lot of valuable talent just got treated poorly. It stinks and stings to know that loyalty and excellence is rewarded with a late career purging without regard for much other than a half baked plan to redirect resources. They have moved out some of the best of the best and will likely replace with much less talent they can pay much less. My guess is there will be a lot of head hunters and competitors after the great wealth of knowledge and talent so keep your chin up. Another door will open if you're willing to knock, put yourself back out there and chances are the competition will come knocking.

For those of you within 1 yr of retirement and recently RA'd - there is a maximum 1 year "bridge" available to employees who are participants in the IBM Personal Pension Plan & are within 1 year of retirement eligibility as of their departure date. Employees must retire on the last day of the month. If the departure date of the resource action is not the end of the month, retirement-eligible employees will need to be put on a Retirement Bridge until the end of the month. So RA date is June 28th, if retirement-eligible, you'll bridge to June 30th.

If your site is tracking stats and trends, I have worked for 17 years with ibm. Most recently I was in the Watson group, and even with near-100% utilization on TWO large/key projects, the RA grim reaper finally got me. I think because I am 64 and a band 9, that put me on the chopping block. The notification date was 3/30/17. I get 3 options -- 1) 90 days (last date 6/28/17) with one measly month severance despite 17 years service 2) go to technical boot camp for 120 days (at half salary/no severence) or 3) do volunteer work for 150 days also at half salary/no severence. I think a cobra-based health insurance as well but not sure the details yet. All bad! I think that if ibm can layoff a very productive employee in their flagship Watson group, consistently billing 38 hrs/week, well they are now cutting into the bone. Beware fellow employees and ibm stockholders!!

Even Watson got hit. I regret joining IBM every minute of every day. If I get RA'ed I will name drop every single person that f---ed up the Watson Health group.

Just got the notice of layoff today as well. Ibm acquired the company I worked for and did 1 big layoff a year after the acquisition cutting us in half and now more of us are gone. We all made the company what it is but I guess that doesn't matter. (EAST COAST)

I've been laid off. No surprise here - I'm remote, services, part time, and (here is the tough part) a week short of 61 years old. So I will be riffed officially 9 months before I was eligible to retire. Too bad.

yes, @35sxh folks should be spining new threads as it's hard to see things in a megathread like this - just saying, it's easier to read when things are broken down

Got a call from my manager's EA that he would call me to "catch up" tomorrow- March 31. What a waste of time that is going to be. I would rather get an email with the same content. 14 years with the company and over 50.

RIF starting week of 27th. Large cuts in S&D technical sales and software technical sales. Of the ones I know are in their 50s or older, several in top achieving accounts with top level performance reviews, multiple 10mm deals in last couple of years. All about costs. Several positions have hiring recs ready to go for mid-April. Coming with a prohibition on hiring anyone back into IBM anywhere for 5 years. Also know of a large RIF list in global services, after two weeks they'll open recs to hire to replace. Heard of hits to tech services but don't know how deep.

There are multiple "projects" going on right now: project sunset, incentive performance management and more. The IPM is an RA hiding behind a performance management review and takes entire departments into mandatory PIP from which there is no real way to exit: if your division funded only 50% of your bonus pool you are automatically on the mandatory pip because you reached only 50% of TI%. You could never control such a metric and can not recover so they are essentially saying - because we couldn't fund your bonus pool fully we consider you an underperformer.

A few days ago I heard from some friends IBM Brazil had layoff almost 30% of the whole Linux Tech Center department. It was Brazil. I also heard about Chine closed LTC office.

For me it sounds like IBM is eliminating all the offices outside U.S that deals with great strategy technologies ,in this case Linux and opensource.

@2Mpaj - that's universal, it's not an Indian issue, the folks on the top will use folks at the bottom

IBM India is one of the most uncertainty IT company, with no reason it makes the bottom level employees fools (bakaras). The bureaucrats in this company are surviving just because of hard work of the bottom level employees . Every year this company come up with one new strategy to cut salary hike and jobs, but the top level employees like executives, directors, etc., Will be safe and they enjoy with employees blood.

IBM cares not about loosing skills. This colocation program has everyone, even managers, sweating in their boots. No one is out of harms way. If you are single or able to move a young family it may be an adventure. But for those who have been loyal to the company, chose to work at home to save company rental space and work around the clock, its either uproot your family and move or you get the ax. So sad. Many in my organization are highly skilled professionals who are seasoned and have proven success to get the job done in stellar fashion -- ahead of deadline and well under budget. This infrastructure is breaking fast. Estimates are that only 25% will stay on board in marketing.

IBM recently announced a plan that will force nearly all of its US Marketing workforce to relocate to one of 5 cities in the US where they will be required to work from IBM offices. The workers will no longer be able to work remote from home offices.

Keep the faith folks.

Usually takes 5-7 months to land a decent slot. If u were like me, they were getting away with robbery on the pay scale.

$ave your ca$h and get that rèsumè together. DON'T LOOK BACK and let go of the negative energy!

Good Luck.
