Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Cobra Coverage

We we talk for a second about how completely inept Chevron has been trying to get us laid off employees cobra coverage? I appreciate the fact that they are covering a big chunk of the coverage, but does it have to take some incredibly long to get it processed?

Last day of work was end of April.... last date of employment was June 13.... still had health coverage until June 30. Why did it take almost the end of July before I even received my paperwork to being the cobra coverage. They knew I would need it way back in April! I paid the first few months IMMEDIATELY online. It still took ADP almost 10 days to inform Chevron of my election and payment..... 10 whole days. Now Chevron is telling me it takes 2-3 weeks before Chevron will inform United Healthcare about my continued insurance coverage. Essentially, I'm not insured for 2 months because Chevron can't get their act together.

Yes, I know I can pay out of pocket and get reimbursed, but this all just creates paperwork nightmares for EVERYONE ELSE.

-jnmz, you are not correct. When the out of pocket medical service payment you made is presented for reimbursement, you will get back everything that is due to you. While in the "gap period" of waiting for evidence of your Cobra coverage, the best course of action is too stay away from the doctors office, but if not possible, keep all receipts. It will be reimbursed later, once they insurance paperwork is completed. Just inform your doctor to note in their records that you have applied for Cobra coverage and presently are in that gap period without the proper evidence of insurance coverage through United Healthcare. Also present to the doctor your current UH Insurance Card.

Sorry, that's not true. Since your doctor's office won't be able to verify coverage, you will be charged a non negotiated rate. You pay it. When it comes time to be reimbursed, ADP bills United Health, they remit the negotiated rate. Guess what you get? Ditto for prescriptions.

@7bdy, you talked to United Healthcare and they told you what they would do. As far as the amount you would have to pay while in the "gap period", it will be reimbursed to you by ADP COBRA Services after presenting them with the receipts, minus any deductible and/or copayment you are responsible to pay. There is no net difference than if you were still an active Chevron employee. Don't go scaring the folks.

Yes, it took almost to the end of July to get my verified COBRA coverage. Be sure to check with Chevron's UHC representative that your account is active before you go to the doctor's office. I was told to use my existing cards and new cards would not be issued.

You definitely do not want to go to the doctor's during the unverified gap period unless it is an emergency. I was told that UHC will only reimburse what it would have paid to begin with. You will be stuck with the "contract discount" the insurance company would have received but you paid instead. Good luck in getting the doctor to refund this to you.

Same cards, same coverage.... Which makes it even more difficult to understand why it takes so long to process.

Unfortunately, OP, it has been taking that long always. I was laid off in April 2015 and it took just as long for me to get my paperwork in the mail from ADP COBRA Services. They are a third party contractor service handling such things for many other large corporations, not only Chevron. Just be sure to keep every shred of paperwork and receipts for out-of-pocket medical expenses you make while in the limbo period between your termination date and the actual date you gave verifiable COBRA coverage. The best thing possible would be to not get medical services unless absolutely necessary during that period.
