Modem PMs are all secretaries. Maybe they could do more with better management. I was once in the elevator in Q with that super overweight PM. She smelled like p--p and deli meat.

That Program Manager who is unhealthy is so fat she can't walk down the hall without getting out of breath. The Sr. Director is such a big mouth fat slob that adds little to the modem team, beyond fighting with other teams and eating huge lunches from Jack in the Box.

Program managers in Qualcomm are glorified secretaries. You will take notes, summarize discussions and send out daily status reports. All others around you will be doing more useful work. When the crunch time arrives .. They will show u the door first ...

the problem is really a structural problem.. the way the org is structured makes it almost impossible for a PM to function in any other way except a glorified secretary.. i guess that is what you get for being a engineering first company.. engineering trumps all and there is no shortage of "leads" on a project.. when everyone is a "lead" of something in a matrix org.. it just gives way to hidden plans and conflicting execution.. making Proj Mgmt simply impossible...

From my experience all program managers are non-technical. they collect status (mostly cooked up and fake) to report to management.

I know one pm that is always communicating with engineers to get status on the project and fails to understand the information due to severe (self admitted) lack of technical capabilities. And finaces and spins the status to make it rosy when she reports it to upper management. She is always looking for "good stories" as she puts it to tell upper management to explain (in her own twisted world ways) any delays. Worst of all, when things don't get delivered as expected management is confused and the pm "pretends" that the status provided to her was something engineers provided when all the time she cooked it up.

Thanks. The Sr. Director running that team seemed odd, really odd, and not very bright. One of her managers looked extremely unhealthy and non-technical.

no real authority to manage a project or program (org structure makes sure you have no real influence).. engineering get the final and only say.. so unless you are good with being a status collection monkey and a glorified secretary, i suggest you run in the opposite direction...
