Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Nasty

There truely is a nastiness about this company that I haven't seen anywhere else ... not business but pure pleasure for those that are allowed to hand it out. ConocoPhillips is at it's core a nasty bully ...

"... the meaner and less productive employees advance faster ..." that's because senior management has no respect and places no value on the average joe without which this company would not function.

ALL the comments on here reflect the culture of ConocoPhillips and the people we work (or worked) with.

I was referring to the post by @HNks55h-3myr as well as a couple of others. The OP posted about his experiences and observations about cultural issues at COP, bullies, intimidation, etc. and a few others posted about their own similar experiences. Then you have 3myr and a couple of others jump on here and start in with their pious castigations about the posters being whiners, losers and so forth. Kinda pissed me off, know what I mean? Those of us who were laid off aren't whining and blaming others for our situation, we're dealing with it. It is what it is. Not all of us got laid off because we sucked... Last thing we want to hear is some rug bunny mouth off that we're a bunch of losers and whiners. I suppose on every internet forum you have to deal with trash like that.

“Who” are you referring to with your post, just curious? One of the problems with many comments is that the poster leaves a reply that is opaque with regard to who or what comment they are referring to: "If the shoe fits... There really are some genuine losers on here. And you are one them."

I still work here and want to stay, but agree with the original poster that this place is full of spoiled, self-serving brats who will say anything to keep their management jobs. I was in a team meeting this week when one of the senior managers totally misrepresented a project of another manager who happened to not be in the meeting. I raised my voice to say that the project was different from what that manager said and was coached by someone else after the meeting that I "shouldn't be looking out for other people or I would be the next one to get looked at" What is this, Animal Farm? Germany in 1929? I have come to accept that I work in a hostile place, but am now afraid to say anything or get laid off next. I'll just hide and hope it gets better.

@HNks55h-3myr must be one of the people I was talking about in my post. DISGUSTED

Losers, whiners, blame someone else, blah, blah, blah. Maybe those posters are just smart enough to know a spade when they see it and call it a spade. You name-callers are probably the same jack-offs we're talking about. Go find yourself a dark corner and piss on yourself.

Having just been “dismissed” after spending the lions-share of my 22 years in the "awl bidness" at COP, I have come to the firm conclusion that the company has become a workplace suffering from paranoia, zero long-term planning, croneyism, and lack of vision and leadership. Yes, all oil and service companies are suffering during this down-turn, but no, not all companies suffer the egregious pss-poor culture and low morale in evidence at COP. I could drone incessantly, but will merely state that I’m disappointed. I don’t regret hiring on with this company (Phillips), experienced exciting challenges and assignments for several years prior to the “descent into hell”, and am thankful for the many positive years I experienced. I have chosen to view my dismissal as a blessing in disguise - it was high time to move on. As a consistently above-average performer who was chosen for multiple challenging domestic and international assignments....I have to be honest when I look in the mirror and admit that my confidence and willingness to contribute to COP’s success has taken a ruthless kick in the as the last 2 years: Yes, it starts at the top, and this company is so corrupt and visionless that it is decaying from the inside out. I’m happy to have my severance and the time to find a new mission in life, and thankfully, COP leadership conveyed and taught me how to recognize “failing” and “lack of integrity”.

Go ahead and leave we don't need you! There are ten more lined up to take your job that are just as good or better and probably smarter! There are always whiners everywhere and it is never their fault they didn't get the promotion or recognition and it is always because of back stabbets taking it and a general conspiracy. Go sing the same song at some other company!

I still work here and this post rings so true. When I started, I (naively) truly thought that hard work and a good attitude would play a large part in recognition for my work. The longer I have been here, the more I have seen people get rewarded while backstabbing, not sharing information, barely working, and asskissing. I am becoming more and more disincentived to work hard daily.

Obviously lots of disgruntled losers commenting on this site! What happened to you has to be someone else's fault! Blame the company, blame management, blame it on the culture! That is what this site is for so enjoy!

Its a culture of fear ... look the other way - f*** your colleagues - don't ask any questions ... competencies for success in ConnocoPhillips

As strange as it may sound, it's true. After almost ten years of working there, I've seen it myself far too often. I've experienced some strange criticism from others that I barely had any contact with. I'm not talking about constructive criticism, I'm talking scathing, blunt and personal attacks. Each time it happened my first thought was 'where the hell did that come from.' I liked my job at COP but dealing with these a-holes was a little over the top. It was a part of the home-grown elitist culture that COP has developed. As another poster has said, it comes from the top down.

Bullies can be anywhere but they are abundant within COP. The meaner and less productive people advance rapidly. There are a disproportionate number of crooked and bully employees in leadership/management positions. The distrust and nastiness within the organization comes from the top down.

Hate and discontent are the only ways to describe morale and behavior within this company.

Absolutely correct post. COPA is the most dysfunctional place I've ever worked. Those working hard are just wearing themselves out and those nasty, back stabbing, do anything to tear another down people get rewarded.

If you are not on the inside there is no way to get recognition here - performance is irrelevant at ConnocoPhillips as employees get settup regularly.

I've never experienced it anywhere quite like COP. Where we come out on top by trying as hard as we can to push everyone else down.

I would agree. The bully mentality is widespread in the oil and gas industry.
