Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel 2016 Layoffs

Feel free to pile on. Here is what we know so far about 2016 layoffs here at Intel:

  1. BK officially announced today that Intel will have 12K job cuts, overall cutting 10% of the global workforce – most of the cuts will be here in the States (I am predicting this).

  2. Cuts to be done by 2017

  3. Going forward, major focus will be on the cloud – Data Centers and IoT devices

  4. BK: We are in the middle of a major strategic transformation, it's going to take a while and will hurt

  5. Client computing group is hurting big time, 15% down sequentially

12 years served (2000-2012). Got steered towards a VSP (nothing voluntary) back in 2012. Had taken my sabbatical year before that, and upon return, found a changed world. Had a lousy last year (2012). Foolishly pursued an HR Open door (zero value). Went through the 'why me' phase, but recognized that unlike 3-4 rounds earlier (SSG, LAD, PCCG), this time was different. Took VSP. Wept when some great managers got hit in the 1,000 manager purge of 2006

Got, 12 weeks pay for 12 years, plus a couple of checks kept coming in 2013. Try explaining that to the IRS. Moved to the Bay Area (got a job offer right after Christmas, with a OEM that takes the Intel reference design, and cranks out the feature rich product within 3-months). Have changed a couple of companies but even with smaller companies, there is simply greater freedom. At least you won't spend close to a year dreading your departure, or trying to make sense of a mid-year BE from 2 years back and other crazy rules.

Let's face it, after Grove, it's been downhill, ever so slowly. And yes, there is a lot of hate directed towards H1Bs - but let me tell you - coming on H1B, or even joining Intel as a RCG is not that great a deal. It is 'indentured servitude'. What does happen is like Cisco, Intel too got into empire building, gave hiring authority to undeserved folks, and they went and bred more reports.

I was shocked to see the kind of mediocre universities that show up in the drop downs at JOLI. Similar to someone coming from a Community College in Sheridan, WY landing here. The visa officer asked me 'can you explain what a history command is ?' and I started laughing before walking him through that in Unix, Novell and Windows. So before you hate, think about the times when there were cuts, and you discussed those folks while grabbing your free banana, and felt smug and a survivor. All those pointless World Cup soccer matches and paint schemes and curved edge business cards and logo changes.

Pretty soon it will be IDF, and the honchos will charge in pumped on the stage and their flunkies will tout 'we are a leaner Intel' and the wheel will turn again. Still have a 4 BR in Hillsboro, which pays a great rent, so if you are not in the Gold rush, you can still 'mine the miners'.

Intel has a huge challenge on it's hand, and if it was not Murthy or someone else, the result, be it Pat, or Rene or anyone (white/asian/black - it does not matter).

So take the package, see if you can ramp on Coursera/Udemy and show you are current - because believe me, people will simply not see value in an intel experience running > 5 years. I could easily take a developing domain (IoT, Hybrid Cloud, Hadoop), and say 'yes, at Intel we were looking into it ...' and then put the pieces together.

The world respects, even fears our critical approach, and values the time we spent here. But just like your favorite college t-shirt, it stops fitting you. It's no body's fault - it just happens

Good Luck

Last year when I got the ISP notification I didn't have my SSL for 3 yrs back and I couldn't get y manager to show me the SSL. They kept sending me to the HR. It basically tok 2-3 weeks to get that information. Once you are tagged good luck getting any info from anybody. They treat you like a criminal.

Successful/can't remember Stock level for 2013

Not sure if i will be among the 12000. Any one else in a similar scenario?

1dnu, no, only white male over 50 are targeted similar to previous layoffs. You are safe and don't worry.

I don't believe managers will be cut. They are too important to Intel. Who will be able to roll up status reports?

I am going to join intel from June. New college graduate and already have their offer latter. Does lay off going to affect me?

Whichever works for them so they hit 12000.

1lds, previous rule was if you had two SSL4/5 during last 3 yrs so I wonder if this time around they changed it to any SSL4/5 during last three yrs.

So if you were rated successful with SSL4/5 - there's a good chance you might be shown the door. That's what the man said in QA.

You'll know as soon as they announce it. Too early. Watch goto.intel.com/ACThub for more info as they get it out to folks.

Does anyone know how they will target the enhanced retirements or VSP? I don't believe my group is targeted but I've already met the rule of 75 criteria years ago. Will they roll this out corporate wide

Like I said by Monday most folks will know.

-April 20-25 if your site is scheduled for closure

-April 25th if you are eligible for enhanced retirements or VSP

-April 25-29 if you are impacted by layoffs

-within 60 days if you are impacted by project cancellation, group specific, co-location or program efficiencies

Define "affected" @uii. If you saw the slide there are FOUR different scenarios/dates.

For SMG, the July '15 ISP was identical to the prior VSP package.

ISS/UBX, So if it's not Monday when will the affected employee be notified?

LOL @ me (-ubx again). I said "the date is NOT Monday for those retired.". That should have said "the date is NOT Monday for those being laid off." I guess I have "enhanced retirement" on the brain and said retired. lol I'm hoping I'm eligible. I'm SO out of here. :)

AGAIN (this is -ubx)... the date is NOT Monday for those retired. Pay attention to what he's saying and/or read the slide with the dates!!!!!! You are WRONG and spreading incorrect info.

If you get a 1:1 meeting request for next Monday you are most likely laid off. I can imagine how stressful it is now @Intel. I was just informed layoffs are immediate and VSP is 60 days. The package will be relocation and if you don't take it you are laid off. They did exact same thing to my group March 2015

No he didn't. There's different timelines for the various groups (enhanced retirement, layoff, etc.)

BK said in his meeting with employees they will be informed by next Monday. Why the news says 60 days if he is saying next Monday?

one yr from now you will look back and say this was the best thing that happened to you. the sooner you leave Intel the sooner you will be happier. Carry on.

11% is a reasonable number. Clears out the marginal performers and a path for those ready for retirement. Business has shifted significantly with PC market and mgmt. has balanced this decline with server business. Can only go so far before needing to take bigger structural changes. Likely waited too long to make this move - question is if new strategy is big enough or will the decline continue?

12k is a big number, but to be fair - many other major tech's have been laying off over the last few years in major ways... Intel has held its ground, hoping the PC industry would pickup, it was only a matter of time until they had the balls to make this change. Really sad for those effected, but i know many who left after years of suffering, and there is life on the other side..... and its usually better :)

Hope they pay severance as per historical levels... they are usually very fair - then, take a vacation and call your old boss back in a year, because you will be needed, and its a better way to get a raise !!!

Sounds drastic - but this move is long overdue. They should also divest their crappy aquisitions (never seen a company so bad at M&A) and focus on the silicon.... they keep pretending to be a software company, and they are god aweful at that too !!!! Good luck to those that stay (expect an extra 20 hrs a week)..

Does anyone know how much the VSP is? In 2009 it was 4 months play + 1.25 weekly x number of years in service... I can only find involuntary SP information online so far, and nothing current...anyone?

You should have seen that coming ...

BK actually warned you of this just a few months ago. Remember what BK said last year in a quarterly update with employees when asked about using SSL as layoff criteria:

"I know from my email people feel like they got caught or surprised, but this is the way a meritocracy works. Expect that in the future we'll probably do similar types of things."

While last time is a surprise and meant to be private, this time is public and no surprise.

Piling on:

  • Reorg starts immediately

  • Most will be laid off within the next 60 days

  • Restructuring will be done by the middle of 2016.

  • The biggest round of cuts ever (10K were cut in 2006)

  • Stacy Smith to run ops, sales

  • Murthy untouched, has more say in the new matrix

Ho hum - Intel creates their own problem by firing and then re-hiring workers. I happened in 2006 with the IT group in the target sites and here they are again 10 years later. Maybe some of those workers would have been spared if Intel hadn't hired will.i.am, or 50 Cent, or spent $100M on a sh--ty smart watch company, or $1.4Bn on Infineon.

Former Intel employee here. Best of luck to those effected.

Rather that puke out the same rhetoric given out the past 5 years and lie to you folks about how everything is going to be ok... they will be if there is a concerted effort to get off your butts, otherwise you will fall by the wayside so get them butts moving.
