The trend that I see is that these Bible Belt based/origin companies simply can not compete at the national and international levels. Basically, in general, bottom tier employees end up working in Oklahoma - and many of the COP managers either started in Oklahoma or were handpicked by predecessors with Oklahoma origins. In the case of COP, it ended up being managers with hick mentalities, risk appreciations, and attitudes that did us in. Of course, COP has been based out of Houston for a while, but the Oklahoma culture is firmly implanted into the company. is it just me, or do others think that the Oklahoma origins of COP did the company in?

No the previous poster is incorrect. Heritage Conoco's culture took over immediately after the merger in the trenches. They had a lot more people and had very strong cliques that rooted out and sidelined the P66 people. The current culture is all Conoco.
You mean heritage Phillips. ConocoPhillips (pre split) = Phillips (dark side-people unfriendly) + Conoco (light side-people friendly). ConocoPhillips (post split)=ConocoPhillips (pre split) - P66 (post split)
The culture is essentially heritage Conoco. There are no P66 people left.
As people state in other posts, the culture at COP is: buddies, favorites, bullying and discrimination. The COP culture is what is wrong with the company. I definitely agree with the OP - he makes some good points. This culture started in Bville and is still around today.
One more Oklahoma origin company should be added to the list - Anadarko. The management cultures that are present in these companies do not allow long term competitive business success.
Oklahoma couldn't be that bad. They did make a musical about it.
@1rqd, one has to wonder what innovation(s) you have accomplished in your career! These projects were delivered after finding a field large enough to develop! But, that being said, I pointed out innovations when the OP questioned basically the intelligence of people that live or from Oklahoma. By the way, I'm not from Ok and have never lived there! But, I have worked with a bunch of intelligent people who were from Oklahoma!

It is just oh so sad that the only deepwater to brag on is Hutton and Magnolia ... very sad indeed. But not so sad as the realization that the same folks that did those projects think they can do it all again.
G4Vmzye-hdd, agree with you that several of the independents helped advance the unconventional plays! It was Phillips that originally drilled the first horizontal in New Mexico. So the OP needs to learn a little about history. It was also an Oklahoma company that helped harnessed the North Sea (Phillips). Another Oklahoma company that succeeded in installing the first TLP- Conoco Hutton Field in the North Sea.

OP conveniently forgets that it's the OKC companies that developed the technology and had the work ethic to discover and develop the unconventional plays. Add to that his/her lack of knowledge re living in (and people of) Oklahoma, and you have a first class idiot. Please keep working for the majors. This creates more opportunities for the rest of us. Oklahoma has a low cost of living and is not overly crowded like the big cities. I see nothing wrong with Oklahoma except for the killer tornadoes.
Let's not compare energy company execs living in NYC or San Fran to those living in OKC, Denver, Houston, Pittsburg or Dallas. Most everyone knows that living in Houston sucks. Dallas isn't far behind. Denver is the top choice, but most companies have elected to move to Houston. For those who want to raise a family in a quality setting with comfortable amenities, OKC or Tulsa are the two best choices. Get a grip. Houston is a cesspool
Why would anybody at the top of their game choose Bartlesville or Oklahoma City over places like Houston, San Francisco, Dallas or New York? At the Executive level it is even more extreme. In the past, what type of executives do you really think would work out of Bartlesville? It is just that the company was based out of Oklahoma for so long, that a certain type of person would work there. Do you really think that Steve Jobs, Jack Welch, Larry Ellison, or Jeff Bezos would ever work out of Bville? Fu** No!! As a result, these companies had winning leaders like Jim Mulva, Ryan Lance, Aubrey McClendon, and James Bennet.
