both candidates want to help a different type "loser" group who can't make it by themselves and think the government should take care of them.

Bernie's followers don't want to work that hard, are jealous of people financially wealthier and more successful then themselves, and expect people that make more/earn more, and have more wealth to freely give them money without really putting much effort into bettering themselves. They want to freeload off of people with money and get an easy ride. They expect wealth redistribution and wealthy people to pay for their own laziness. It's like affirmative action for the non-so-successful whiners. Bernie's followers blame their financial predicament on anyone "wealthier" than themselves.

Trump's followers, on the other hand, feel they are being left behind because they are white. They feel non-whites who have done better financially then them are stealing their opportunities, despite not willing to put the time/effort and investing in improving themselves. People that dropped out of college or didn't take their education seriously who know see the industry shifts to jobs/professions for which they incapable of doing themselves, nor are they willing to put the time or effort to improve their skillset when the industry itself is changed. They expect a government to take care of them by giving "affirmative action" to white people, and preferential treatment when their own skills are outdated. Trump followers blame their financial situation on anyone that isn't white that is doing better financially them themselves.
Same type of people, different reasons to be whining and different group of people to cast blame on.
It's amazing that the direction of the country is heavily influenced by the biggest losers in this country, when in reality, the country would probably be better off if these types of people would be disenfranchised.
