Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

How to spot an ailing tech company....

Copied from another thread...

@FUCBQxQ-wsf For a tech company, it's not a question of if there's going to be a layoff, it's simply a question of when. There was a time in Qualcomm's history in which people would kill to get into that company. And the interviews and entry to get in was just as tough as it is right now to get into companies like Google. And there was a time in Qualcomm's history in which you were ridiculously compensated too. Unfortunately, every tech company gets stale, and every tech company once they gets big and fat, lose much of their attractiveness, just like in real life.

When a successful tech company first starts out, the company is filled with A+ players....Then, as the company gets bigger and bigger, A+ players start to hire A- players, which in turn start to hire B+players...And as the company continues to grow, B+ players then hire C+ players, and finally when there's many C+players, they end up starting to hire a lot of D- and F players...And then when there's a lot of C-F players in the company, the end up fvcking up the company because they realize they won't ever be good as the A-B+ players, so the end up playing other games that bullshit politics and end up in bullshit positions collecting status and pretending to be useful...Eventually there are so many C-F players, that the A players end up leaving, and what remains are C-F+..And since they can't do any of the the real creative work, the company eventually collapses on its own weight.

Kinda of like what happened over at Motorola, Lucent, NorTel, Alcatel, and insert your other favorite western telco company that no longer exists.

It's kinda like what's going on with Apple right now. All the A+ players are being swamped by C-F players now that are relocating. That apple magic is slowly being chipped away by all the C-F players. You know the tech company is screwed when marketing has taken over and starts to suggest the best way to sell more phones is by adding more colored versions of it. Or you know you're screwed if the HR department is screwed when they start getting louder and louder about how they are going to hire more people based on diversity instead of technical ability. As an engineer, that's your queue to GTFO and find another employer that doesn't have so many bullshit people making bullshit decisions. You won't win as a techie.

No, pretty much everyone that complains about him is because he's incompetent. Stop trying play the race card for masking incompetence. Shit, I can't believe I told a white person to stop playing the race card.

@FUL3yDM-bnc. Todd is an extremely smart dude, and he hires extraordinary people, otherwise he wouldn't be able to stay such a long time in his position.

One thing is for certain. It's unlikely any any telco company in the US will survive. No US company will be able to compete on cost and cost alone, and once you remove the Qualcomm patent and royalty gravetrain, it's game over. QCT will never be able to compete against the Asian companies..Just like the Europeans telco companies weren't able to compete with the Asian handset makers.

Should have read "H1-B's aren't the problems in the company"....

Oh, and you'll have a lot of old timer players that were once A-A+ players. They might still be there, but their motivation has changed. Rather than really tring to contribute in a meaningful way, they are spending more time rest and vesting. You see when the going environment is run by C-F players, A-A+ players end up behaving like C-F players because there's really little incentive to be an A-A+ player moving forward. And yet, the financial benefits of staying probably means you're willing to put up with a lot of crap, albeit temporary, just so you can "milk the gravy train" as long as you. There's nothing wrong with it. Anyone in that situation would probably do the same thing.

@FUL3yDM-glg.. Well that's simple to explain. Qualcomm is at a stage when many of the employees are D to F- players. So it's no surprise some of them also wont get into Apple, even if the ones hiring are C- players. That's probably an indication of how far Qualcomm's employee quality has fallen.

I can't think of a single person who interviewed with Apple that didn't get in.

That leads me to the next point. Companies like qualcomm are in a talent pool death spiral. The A-A+ players have either left or in the process of leaving. The remaining C-F- players will do everything possible to keep their jobs, knowing they won't be able to find anything else outside. They probably shouldn't have been hired in the first place, and they know that. Hence, they'll do anything in their powers to keep their jobs, even if it means sabotaging coworkers, teams, projects, etc.

very nice post after a long time.

BTW, I know of some QCOM folks who couldn't make it into AAPL also -- happened two weeks ago.

Oh and once the ship has set sail, and what remains is a bunch of C-F players in the companies, there's really no turning back. The C-F players will never ever incentivize the A-A+ players to come back, because naturally, being C-F players, they feel threatened by people more competent them themselves. So any sort of hiring C-F players make will only be other people who are equally C-F players. But the feeling is mutual. A-A+ players will never go to a company dominated C-F players, unless he is just a retard. Afterall, A-A+ players tend to write their own tickets as to where they end up.

Say you're going to Apple at this stage of Apple's history is not saying much about how good you are. Apple is pretty much hiring all sorts of players right now: A-F. At least Google still has the bar pretty high. Which probably explains why Google is still kicking ass while Apple is in decline and hasn't come out with anything really innovative lately.
