Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

That's not an offer...

Same old, same old. They cannot seem to fathom why they are unable to get the numbers they are looking for from these. For those of us between ages of say 45-55 that have been around here a while, and are still too young to actually "retire", there is no incentive to take this offer. Literally, the only people it makes sense for are the ones that were retiring anyway, and good for them. If they would just take it seriously and sweeten the severance to one year max instead of six months, they'd get all the takers they could handle. A poster in another thread did a great job summing up why this makes no sense for the vast majority:

I wouldn't take it for the following reasons. One, there isn't any additional benefit vs involuntary severance. Two, if you take it and the company accepts, you will not be eligible for unemployment benefits. Third, if you ask for it and don't get it, you have signaled to the company you want to leave. Fourth, you are better off to keep working, get involuntary severance and then be eligible for unemployment.

And so, the dance goes on.

Sounds weird but makes me feel lucky to have ended up on what would become the Verizon side of the house after divestiture. They may s— too, but at least they had a decent voluntary offer last year. For what it's worth, I wouldn't take what AT&T is offering either, and I'm retirement eligible. I'd wait for the involuntary in order to get the unemployment and a bit of extra working time.
