UAW is obsolete. It takes away the competetiveness of American OEMs. How come Tesla can do it without the inept UAW folks? Look at Hyundai, KIa, Toyota, Honda and NIssan. All made without UAW crushing their competetiveness and therefore able to provide jobs in USA. Meanwhile, GM, Ford and FCA are forced to move some operations in Mexico due to high labor costs of these UAW who are mostly unskilled labor.

I see a whole lot of heavy set folks out there on the picket lines. Doesn’t look to me like they are missing any meals. Please GM, wait these profit-s—ers out and bring the uaw to its knees. There’s plenty of inventory in the dealerships to handle current overall demand, and the public at large is not on the side of the uaw.
Unions, UAW built the middle class. What I find ironic is the only big profits are made in the good ole USA, where we have such a strong middle class...yet, it is the corporate and Wall Street greed that want to k–l the once good wages of our middle class. Soon, in the not too distant future, our economy will be just like a Third World country.
I must have missed the part when the UAW invested billions and billions into plants, equipment, and infrastructure. Oh wait, that never happened. The UAW doesn’t produce anything except higher costs and low productivity, Just leeches s—ing the life out of everything they attach themselves to.
UAW in Warren Tech Center should be banned from picketing, no one cares anyway! They're only making the salaried people upset and throw more support at GM executives. I guess it's hard to reason with a bunch of low skilled labor that thinks they should own more of the company than they are actually entitled to.
Because engineering, IT, and contract take the brunt of the abuse. When in doubt, lay them off.
Have to recycle them and hire them back later to fill other departments, but hey...
Can they at least reach an agreement to stop picketing Warren site? Why punish engineers and IT? What did we do?
That "mentality" of protection is a gangster language perpetrated by those at the top in UAW. Again, what protection does any plant emplyoyee has at Toyota or Honda, yet never have the problem that GM, Ford or FCA does? While lowly union workers are getting $250/week this week, UAW executives are still collecting their 6 figure paychecks...that's the protection these perps are speaking of. The real sheep is the poor union workers who have been repeatedly lied to by UAW. Without UAW, the quality of cars in GM would be better because the perception of "security and protection" won't be there anymore when you're doing a shoddy work as a plant labor. GM should look into completely removing UAW from their plants or just open plants in the South where people are more enthusiastic to work.
UAW is structured to provide shielding protection against its lowest performing members. At the same time Marry Barra does not need $22Million a year while shutting down so many jobs. Take a pay cut also MB. Utilizing a large group of temp workers will allow more defects to be implanted into our vehicles. Bye Bye GM, the greed machine will be the end of us all.
When they clear out the UAW, then no one will have any protections.
Will be just like the contractors who got a call on Saturday, not to come in Monday, and the Salary who were made obsolete, because all the contractor safety cushion was gone before they got removed. Once they eventually replace the union (if that occurs), everyone at all levels can be replaced and recycled at a moments notice - equally.
Almost seems strategic. Don't like the 10% wage decrease we just imposed? Good, quit, we'll find someone else to fill your position. We can, because we've eliminated all barriers of protection for everyone. We can fill your position faster than hundreds or thousands of you can compete, and find other jobs. That sounds about right.
To the posters saying that Mary and the executives have the support of the salaried workers, does this include the thousands of salaried workers that they fired earlier this year?
LMAO...enjoying these comments. I'm on no one's side but clearly UAW losing the debate here with their non sensical responses. Can you respected people of UAW come up with a higher than grade 8 quips to the questions about UAW not existing in Toyota or other companies that make good cars?
Yeah UAW is not only an eye sore but it's also dragging down everyone's productivity. Get UAW out for sure and replace them with more productive people or robots.
There's a reason GM's stock hasn't tanked inspite of the strike entering it's 3rd week. But no UAW will be able to grasp that. The only reason GM stock fell today is because of manufacturing news which is indicative of the economy. Agree with the poster below on Mary Barra having support from her salaried staff but also from Wall Street. UAW is fooling no one. The Glory days of unions are all gone because frankly speaking, with IoT and other tech, these low skilled workers are the low hanging fruit. They're actually giving Mary the incentive to lay them all off which she's clearly not afraid to do, given what they did to Lordstown and Oshawa. So go Mary GO...kick UAW out.
Lol, that's just not true at all. In what world is anyone in existence supporting MB?
GM has left all markets in the world because they can't make a profit, aside from US, and China for the moment. With GM alienating many of their US customer base, and China floundering in sales, it won't be long before they become irrelevant, a behemoth that will sink among its own weight. They didn't need the UAW to sink their overseas operations, they did that on their own. Make no mistake, this behemoth has become irrelevant, as there's nothing outside of US or China to brag about.
Regardless of your position, salaried. UAW, contract or other, you will eventually go down with this ship. While you are too busy arguing with your counterparts, you are elusive to the fact that there a hole in the hull, and there's no where left to go but to sink. You can't see the forest for the trees, and cut off your nose to spite your face.
Incredibly silly. Enjoy as time proves it right. Only two worthwhile markets left worth competing, for now...
Most UAW have no intellect at all! For them, it's all about me...me...me. They do more harm than good to their peers. Look, who are the first casualties of their dumb move?...the smaller man, i.e. other plant workers in supplier companies, GM workers in Oshawa, St. Catherines's and CAMI. Meanwhile, salaried workers are rallying behind Mary and the executives to give UAW the middle finger, because that's what they deserve.
Lol @ 11iv80En-1ndo, what divide and conquer strategy are you smoking here? That doesn't answer the question how other OEMs flourish and do well without UAW, as well as their plant workers. Businesses don't need unions these days or it makes the case for automation a lot easier.
Unfortunately you cant reason people out of positions they didn't reason themselves into.
It is far easier to just trick people, than to convince them they're being tricked. Hence the idiocracy will ensue.
I see the divide and conquer strategy is alive and well in the country. Most people fall for the prapaganda with reckless abandon, pinning salaries vs contract vs UAW, vs other.
Wages as a whole comprise of less than 3% of a vehicles cost, yet is foolishly touted as an emense cost, especially come union negotiations time. While I've never worked as Union, I've worked along side of many of them, multiple times. I have family union, but I've been contract and salary my entire career. There are good and bad bunches in all three categories. They aren't all that dissimilar than yourself just because you wear a different hat, or hold a different color shirt collar.
The only thing that should be made obsolete in today's age, is using the same divide and conquer strategy that pins everyone against everyone else. Like the example of leaving two crabs in a low walled box, neither will get ahead or escape, because they're too busy holding each other back. Those beyond the box know what they do. They pin you, against someone else. In this example, the UAW.
Your corporate controllers are the ones you should direct your dissatisfaction. They continue to deceive so many.
I agree with most here. I thank the UAW for its role in history, but that's also where it should belong - in history.
UAW has got to go. These guys picketing so it takes longer to get out of work and spend time with family
OP poses a valid question. What is it that the UAW does better than non-represented auto workers? There’s some really talented workers but they wouldn’t need representation to have a great paying job anyhow. UAW workers have been brainwashed to protect the slackers. Why? So their corrupt leadership can pick even more pockets to post for their illegal boondoggles.
I hope GM fires every UAW members. Lots of people waiting to get jobs in there, and they'd be more grateful and thankful that they have jobs. UAW is a disgrace to american work ethics feed by greed of some lazy get rich gang at the top who are even stealing from their union members. Time to change the labor landscape in America and be more conmpetitive againt foreign manufacturers.
Mark Reuss is that you?
UAW helps determine your robust salary and vacation days at GM and other OEMs
ok mary
If you're right, why doesn't GM fire everyone and start hiring non union workers?
UAW is a bane to free market system in America. Soon, Chinese products will come and make it even more difficult for American companies to compete. Nio will soon compete with the American electric cars. Dont forget European cars as well. Only American OEMs have this disadvantage of having to feed a fat lazy pig, when they can opt for a lean mean machine.
