Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

UAW and Big 3

We all see the headlines regarding the Union corruption. Is it me or does the timing, right as the contract is set to expire, seem a bit coincidental? Did the Big 3 plan to expose this in order to diminish the Union as viable in the future. Do they have more dirt they might not be willing to expose for favorable negotiations? If so, might this backfire and expose those in "company" management who were complicit? Are the Big 3 willing to throw these people under the bus and say they had no knowledge of what they were doing or the "donations" they may have been making to Union officials?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Maybe a short strike so Union management can save face with the membership and Company management can use the new contract as an excuse to shave more salaried jobs?

@112s8jM1-1sjd- Sorry but the UAW leadership has let their members down over the years. I am not only talking about the rampant corruption that we see. Their biggest letdown was letting the membership numbers drop so much. It seems that instead of keeping, and increasing, jobs for their members they took the increases in pay. They should have focused on increasing membership, i.e. keeping jobs in America. I think the same thing is going to happen with the latest round, the UAW will take pay increases over job retention. Actually UAW leadership not only let their members down but also the American working class. Hopefully they can redeem themselves.

Putting the blame on the union for jobs being sent to Mexico and Japan is disingenuous at best – and exactly the kind of in-fighting management wants. Honestly? How many white collar workers really cared about manufacturing jobs going overseas until it trickled down to their ranks? Jobs have been moved overseas to line the pockets of Mary Barra and other executives, and, yes, there is a good chance they will use any concession they must make to the UAW as an excuse to lay off more white collar workers, but that doesn't mean they weren't going to lay more off anyway. The blue collar vs white collar arguement just gives them a scapegoat for decisions actually made out of pure greed.

What about the rest of the non UAW work force who work for large corporations? Oh yeah, they just bend over and grab their ankle's. Yes sir, ma'am anything I can do, I'll even work for free, all weekend, anything, less healthcare, oh that's ok too. Sure it's ok lay me off for cheaper labor, out source my job, I have a degree, I can easily find a new job with all my skills. Lol

If they strike in the plants, will gm ask salaried employees to fill in? Or will production just stop for months?

I want to know why we don't see news stories about corruption inside the company.

If unions didn’t fight against right-to-work legislation, the rest of society might take them more seriously. The union membership bears responsibility - day after day - to justify their worthiness of employment. Your leadership is in perpetual failure mode because their business model is legal extortion.

I think you nailed it 112s8jM1. Their union leadership corruption has effectively enabled GM to transfer jobs overseas, free from fear of any significant UAW action. Ever since the 80's I always wondered why the UAW didn't put up a serious fight when GM and others were eliminating American workers by transferring production to Mexico, China and other cheaper venues. Well now we know. If the UAW doesn't replace their leadership and start actually fighting for their members jobs then they should be replaced with an effective union.
