Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM should start with the HR department

Anyone with a high school diploma can do HR work, if suggest cutting there first, Hell make all of HR contract heads or better yet farm it out to a company like Bartech! HR people are clueless when it comes to people and their careers, as far as their involvement they should have zero say in any GM business period, it should be all handled by the GM hiring managers. Anyone can process paperwork with entry-level computer skills HR is an overpaid joke that knows nothing about the people or background of an individual. GM should seriously consider making a deep change with the so called HR department.

Agreed, @ZKTAKpT-kpfv.

HR is a joke at GM. I recently resigned and did not have an HR exit interview. This was the only company I experienced it.

The townhall was very positive.

Clearly you missed the sarcasm that was intended in the post about GM being a "tech" company. Mary Barra and her squad are desperately hoping the masses will drink the GM kool-aid being offered and suddenly realize "why yes, yes, GM IS a tech company! look at the great tech products they put out!".

Love that Mary. Always good for a belly laugh whenever I see her (or her minions) being interviewed.

In what way?

Where are my free meals and massages?

6njt: maybe HR wants to make sure they don't accidentally hire any old people that they'll just have to turn around and lay off.

1057za9A-2myj - Ah ah ah (wagging finger at you), you forget GM is not a car company, we are a TECH company. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2018/10/29/ceo-mary-barra-wants-people-think-gm-tech-company/1808690002/

I'm being told that HR has a BIG hand on who is hired and that they are taking on more and more responsibility in the hiring process, why?

Agreed.
Considering they are a car company maybe they should consider car studies?
I don't know.🤔

HR is where they put the social justice brownshirts who enforce the Maoist diversity religion that is being indoctrinated at our finest religious...err educational institutions like UM, Harvard, Stanford, in the black studies and women's studies and gender studies programs and classes.

HR will soon be replaced completely by computers systems looking for "key buzz words" anyway. All of everything they do will fall on the employees to manage their own health insurance, pay is already electronic with direct deposit, managers will select pay through the computer.
Essentially HR will become null and void as we become more "Tech" that will be a significant savings for corporations like Greedy Motors. 👍

I knew the local HR folks in Chandler and they were in agreement that a lot of the moves and budget cuts made this year were insane. Like most of us, they just take whatever news comes from above, smile, and nod their heads. If the message coming from the top is not the right one, I wouldn't try to pin it on all the HR folks. Just like any department within GM, there are good employees and bad ones.

To the poster who takes issue with the race card statement— I have personally seen the late punches by one hourly person. He is late more often than not.
Every new supervisor tries to address it, and it’s always the same result—the race card is played and it’s a complete waste of time. Some of us still have high expectations and ethics. This is just one of many examples I have seen.
HR is so afraid of this and angering the UAW. HR does not earn any respect.

When I was laid off in February, the HR person did not even know my level (asked me if I was a company car driver) or my length of service (my service date was on the label on the envelope they handed me). You would think they could take 30 seconds to know this before they fire someone, especially someone who had worked there many years.

And today it's still a poorly managed mess.

Actually, GM's HR was contract, by and large, until a couple years ago. I believe much of the recruiting was done by temp workers through an HP subsidiary.

They insourced it because the whole recruiting process was a poorly managed mess.

I disagree. I was laid off in Feb and was treated respectfully by the local HR team. I know one of them struggled a lot during January and Feb as the planning was happening. In the years leading up to my layoff, I almost always got a response to questions or pointed to the right person. Most of the time that was back to my manager. I don't think it really HR's role to solve problems within other departments.

There are of course people at the top (Finance?) who drove some of the decisions for the layoffs, but HR's job was to execute the plan.

Anyway, I don't think it helps to broad-brush an entire department. Too much of these kind of statements these days. There are some good people trying to do their best. I also take issue with the race-card statement. I've seen gaming of the system by 'all'.

Agreed, HR is the most useless group I have ever seen, have absolutely no clue what they do.

The only lawsuit they are not afraid of is age discrimination, as evidenced in the round of layoffs earlier this year.....

HR is pretty much a joke. Every try to discipline a minority with overwhelming evidence?
The race card gets played and HR says let it go. They are so afraid of lawsuits and bad PR that the problem multiplies when coworkers see how easy it is game the system
