Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

partially met, should I look for new job

I was partially met according to the review, I would say 80% of the wording on the review was just unfair, seemed I was set up for failure...

supevisor has no deadline date for me to show improvement before they want to decide to let me go, and keep telling me this kind of layoff also keep them blind sided as I am.

Should I start to look for new job or at least wait till mid term review?

The SLT never makes bad decisions.

It must be you.

I hear a lot of people getting a year end review
Not sure what happened to me- I got a rear end review. I met expectations, so there's that.
So many questions.

It's simple really.
We will look at your skillset and your net worth.
If they don't match, there is an issue.

"Sigh, I believe you have confused shareholder with plantation owner."

Without shareholders, there would be no financial institution, grocery store, or job for you to exist in this world. The suggestion of "plantation owner" shows your significant "poor me" resentment mindset. A poverty mindset. Really sad.

Business 101 (since you obviously don't understand): Shareholders, aka stockholders (anyone with a 401k, pension or brokerage account) own a share of a company. Without this, no publicly traded entity (nor privately held company) would exist. Hopefully some of this is sinking in. Your life would be null and void without stockholders. You would freeze to death and starve without them.

"You sound like a child. May I suggest getting a real job. Next time please list your assets so that we can properly value them to pay down your debt."

The only child in this conversation is the person I'm speaking to, who has the intellectual capacity of a five year old. Just so you know, I have no debt. Everything in my life is paid for barring taxes & insurance, which are perpetual costs.

I suggest you get a business education before you embarrass yourself further.
There are winners and losers in this world. I see that you have made a choice and have invested in it poorly.

"Without shareholders you would have no job to complain about. Do you understand?
Free yourself from those that you hate."

Sigh, I believe you have confused shareholder with plantation owner.
93% of the market is owned by 10% of the population.
I sincerely doubt most of those 10% have any useful skills to society or can
build any sort of useful product.
Funny, the size of the of the US debt is roughly half the size of the stock market.
It is almost as if the 10% 'borrowed' from the US public and transferred it to their share price. We are going to want that money back with interest. Don't we will put you on a payment plan and you can sell us your assets dirt cheap.

All of this reminds me of the Mayans sacrificing people for good crops and rain. I don't know if they bothered to say " hey sorry man you just weren't that great we have to use you in the ritual" but I suspect that they were honest and said hey this is a really noble thing you are doing sacrificing yourself for the rain and the crops. Would it be better if that was the position of general motors? Thank you for your efforts. We are sorry but you have been chosen for a great sacrifice.

Unless you're in a union, you're an at will employee.

A company doesn't need to create a paper trail to fire you.

They can get rid of you for any reason or no reason, except for race.

The true reason they're marking you as a low performer is to cheat you out of the severance promised in the employee manual, cheat you out of Unemployment, and avoid ruining the SLT's reputations for mismanaging the company by saying "it's not us, it's you"

If they cared to grow and retain an employee they would have told precisely what needed to change. Instead, imo, what GM is doing is creating a paper trail to cover their butts in case they decide to terminate this employee. Easiest thing to do is apply at another company or department while you’re still lo employed.

"If you were fired from GM years ago, it is fair to say that you should move on from GM job discussion boards. It's not an insult. It's good advice. Let it go."

Oh, HR has jumped on the board
to try and give GM legal cover
and hide its sleazy behavior.
I am definitely shocked. :-)

Post from TheLayoff.com

Is this “X” now full of angry, spiteful comebacks, or an open forum where contributors are answering the original posted thread/question in an effort help or encourage the poster, based on their good and/or not so good experiences while at GM? “Jeez man” is right, chill out and try to understand others views. Still have lots of friends and family with GM and follow all the Detroit-based automotives forums, so sorry it doesn’t fit your know it all & negative narratives that everyone who left GM must be worse off!?! Laughable. Now go make it a great day!!

A lot of them are 80 year old conservative men with no friends.

So they come here to preach gloom and doom to get a reaction.

Sorry, but it’s all BS. I got out a couple years ago. Insane new “Director” just didn’t like me, her own issues, not mine. I didn’t kiss her feet or the water she walked on. They didn’t have any documentation to justify any performance issues after 7 years of great annual reviews at GM. I fought it briefly, provided documentation of accomplishments to HR and her boss, meeting all goals, no issues at all… HR was even less helpful. Took my decent severance and waved but-bye. Found great remote work and got out of automotive industry as a whole. Best thing to have happened in hindsight! Oh, that Director got swept out within a year, along w her boss… it’s a messed up place, prepare your exit plan now. Godspeed.

At least they give you a read between the lines warning. With contract, on a Saturday call, don't come to work on Monday. It's so easy to not care when you stand outside the group getting culled.

You're likely on a list of employees they are attempting to remove, but HR documents everything, and needs to make sure it's all legit. GM has a hire many program, fire many minus a few every decade program. It's a human resource recycling program. I'm not making this up, having lived it through two decades. You are likely on this list.

So what do you do? You get your stuff in order in that when it happens, it doesn't much matter. You also get all your references in order, for when it happens. GM employees, aren't allowed to offer endorsements, so word it differently. I left with nearly two dozen letters of references from GM salary, that gave the middle finger to corporate, to stand by me. This became the golden ticket in my career.

The best advice ever given to me while working at GM in my youth, was always have a layoff fund you invest in. It's not if, but only a matter of when they will replace you.

Need to send a clear message: meets or doesn’t meet.. EGM (millennial?) needs to be sent to Dale Carnegie training to be more confident in assessments.

Some PIPs and poor performance reviews are legit, but the vast majority are just stealth layoffs so they can slide under the WARN Act, and also not pay severance.

Definitely get applications and interviews going. Worst case is you don't need them.

I was laid off from GM a few years back in Feb after a partial met rating for end of year. My manager said it was nothing to worry about, but it was for sure. I'm glad I mass-applied and had a job lined up with a short gap between work. It doesn't hurt to have a back up plan.

I'm sorry, and good luck.

If they don't tell you what you did wrong and how to improve, it's just a setup to get you out.

If they can't give you examples, it's because there aren't any.

Obviously if there were a real issue there wouldn't be a reason to keep it secret from you so you couldn't fix it.

I would say that you should find out in what areas you need to improve and then work on improving them. At the same time, keep your resume and LinkedIn profile updated and at least look into finding a better position. This way you are covering all of your bases as best as you can.

"partially met"
sounds like you are a possibility for the next layoff
now they have grounds to let you go if they want/need to
whether that review is justified or not
i am not sure why they did not tell you what you need to do
to improve
